The Human-Centered Computing Group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a User Experience Designer to help support our cross-functional project teams, building software applications and data visualization tools for national security and energy stakeholders. As a UX designer at PNNL, you will collaborate with world-class scientists, researchers, business stakeholders, agile software development teams, and end-users to create world-class user experiences.
You will collect user requirements through subject-matter expert interviews, user interviews, and workshops. You will design well-documented concepts, wireframes, user-flows, high-fidelity mockups, interactions, prototypes, and design specifications throughout the product life-cycle. You will help broaden the impact of user experience design through business development, internal and external outreach, and mentoring of junior staff. The ideal candidate will demonstrate Design leadership and strong knowledge of user-centered design principles and present a clear rationale for design decisions through a robust portfolio of useful, useable, and desirable designs.
This position requires interactions with government, military, and industry officials nationwide for a variety of programs, projects, and tasks, including technical and programmatic concept development, planning, coordination, integration, and execution that can be supported by data science and deep learning techniques.

- Identify the illicit smuggling of nuclear materials into the country [Link]
- Develop large data pipelines to thwart funding for terrorists, nuclear proliferators, drug cartels, and rogue leaders [Link]
- Use remotely sensed imagery to identify and monitor the progression of wildfires [Link]
- Analyze the resiliency of the electric power grid to prevent large-scale outages [Link]
- Model climate change and impacts to civilization [Link]
- Hunt for the existence of dark matter to understand the nature of the universe [Link]
Responsibilities
- Collaborate and provide design leadership of multi-disciplinary teams to define user interaction and workflow models for research and product features
- Lead project teams to turn observational data and user requirements into creative solutions
- Interact with government customers to define requirements and demonstrate user-centered design vision
- Write and manage use cases that inform design decisions
- Design innovative solutions to make complex information and interaction as simple to understand as possible
- Establish new visual design systems, develop new design standards or work within existing style guides depending on project needs
- Design high-quality visual assets that can be leveraged in large complex software environments
- Lead and author design specifications and other artifacts to aid in research and development
- Create interaction scenarios and storyboards to communicate design ideas
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience
-OR- - MS/MA
-OR- - PhD
Preferred Qualifications:
- 2+ years of experience with designing user driven applications (web applications, mobile applications, etc.)
- 2+ years of experience with creating wireframes and visual mockups
- 2+ years of experience with using design software, including Sketch, Adobe XD or Figma
- Ability to provide an online portfolio or samples at the time of interview
- Experience with creating prototypes
- Experience with HTML, JavaScript, CSS a plus
- Active Federal Q Clearance and ability to maintain such clearance
