Overview
The Hughes Center for Agro‑Ecology, a UMD nonprofit affiliated with the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, seeks a new Director to lead research, outreach, and partnership initiatives that promote environmentally sound and economically viable agriculture and forestry in Maryland.
Responsibilities- Serve as the outward face of the Hughes Center and lead its team.
- Maintain and expand relationships with stakeholders, the Board, external partners, UMD leadership, and the broader community.
- Develop and execute a strategic vision to increase the Center’s visibility and impact.
- Build understanding with state and federal policy makers and government officials.
- Support the effective functioning of the Center’s Board of Directors.
- Engage UMD and AGNR to leverage student and faculty resources and enhance collaboration.
- Master’s degree in agriculture, environmental science, public policy, or a related field.
- At least five years of experience leading and managing an organization or team of comparable size, preferably within university, government, or nonprofit settings.
- Experience in financial management and budgeting across multiple funding sources.
- Track record of leading large and small projects.
- Success in raising competitive and non‑competitive funding from public and nonprofit sectors.
- Collaborative leadership and advocacy skills.
- Strong relationship‑building with internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience building and engaging a diverse Board of Directors.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to recruit and develop staff.
- Understanding of non‑profit and university operations.
- Familiarity with Maryland’s agriculture and environmental communities.
Both internal and external candidates are encouraged to apply. The initial appointment will be part‑time (0.5
FTE) as a Senior Faculty Specialist with potential to grow to full‑time (1.0
FTE) if funding permits.
Internal candidates must hold an associate professor or higher rank in AGNR;
Regular faculty benefits and a salary range of $50,299.72–$. Background checks are required.
