We are designing and building a one‑of‑a‑kind facility that will turn radioactive and chemical waste left over from World War II and Cold War plutonium production into a form safe for disposal. Your efforts will help protect the nearby Columbia River and the communities, salmon, and wildlife along its shorelines throughout the Northwest.
Job SummaryIn this role, you will be responsible for ensuring that utility and process systems are designed to required codes and standards and established design criteria. You will assist with delivering challenging design basis documents such as calculations, drawings, and reports, as well as developing required procurement documents such as specifications and material requisitions that will be used in the equipment procurement process.
Your leadership will look to you to provide guidance to junior engineers and develop innovative solutions to technical challenges while still ensuring that the unique and complex requirements of the task are met. Additionally, you will provide input to help track the progress of deliverables to ensure that they meet schedule requirements and support leadership with input to trends.
- Designing the fluid and gas systems in the WTP process facilities.
- Assist with discipline work process execution in a technically adequate manner and in accordance with company, contract, and industry codes and standards.
- Prepare Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), technical reports, studies, design documentation, calculations using engineering software, and specifications for complex mechanical equipment for the waste treatment process and supporting systems.
- Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the client in the development of the design.
- Mentor junior engineers.
- Coordinate closely with other technical disciplines in planning and executing work as an integrated team.
- Complete assigned engineering tasks within budget/schedule.
- Support and implement the Nuclear Safety Quality Culture in day‑to‑day work activities.
Level I: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Nuclear, or Chemical Engineering from an accredited university or college with a minimum of 5‑8 years of relevant professional work experience, or in lieu of education, a minimum of 9‑12 years of relevant professional work experience.
Level II: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Nuclear, or Chemical Engineering from an accredited university or college with a minimum of 8‑10 years of relevant professional work experience, or in lieu of education, a minimum of 12‑14 years of relevant professional work experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills- Must be authorized to work and remain in the United States without Bechtel visa sponsorship now or in the future.
- Must be able to complete and pass a pre‑employment drug screen, physical (if located at the construction site), and background check which includes verification of employment and education.
- Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site.
- Non‑U.S. citizens from countries identified by the Department of Energy as posing heightened security concerns are subject to additional security requirements that limit site access.
- Requires extensive technical knowledge and understanding of engineering systems, engineering calculations, applications of engineering methods and materials, applications of computer software to engineering problems to ensure the design is cost‑effective, in accordance with applicable safety, health, environmental regulations, customer requirements and engineering codes and standards.
- Nuclear experience in working with procedures meeting quality assurance programs such as ASME‑NQA‑1, MIL‑Q‑9858A, or ISO‑9000.
- Excellent listening, oral and written communication, planning and organizational skills are essential.
