Assistant Environmental Scientist

12 month contract
Pay range: $31.50 - $34.65
Our global EPC Firm client is hiring an Assistant Environmental Scientist for a long-term contract opportunity for their Richland, WA location.
- This position is largely field-based to support upcoming construction projects.
- The ideal candidate will be in the Richland area, but the team is open to having them report to the Vancouver office if they are a right fit.
- 75% travel
- No per diem, expenses only.
- Mostly day trips but there may be occasional overnights. When not in field, will be in Richland, WA office.
The Environmental Scientist will assist in construction monitoring, communicating with landowners and local stakeholders, conducting environmental assessments, supporting environmental compliance efforts, preparing permitting applications and analyzing environmental data for various types of projects, including high-voltage transmission line routing, power generation, chemical manufacturing, aviation, and construction activities. This position requires a basic understanding of regulatory and technical aspects related to construction practices, environmental permitting, and compliance auditing including:
- Conducting environmental site inspections and preparing site inspection reports, including erosion and sediment control inspections. Be the primary point of contact for the project staff.
- Liaise with property owners, municipality representatives, and construction personnel to communicate project schedules and planned activities affecting property ingress/egress.
- Assisting with field surveys, assessments, and collecting project-related data for analysis in environmental impact projects.
- Performing environmental site investigations, supporting erosion control efforts, subsurface soil sampling, and stormwater monitoring.
- Developing and implementing Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPPs). SWPPP compliance is primarily associated with construction but may also include operational plans.
- Developing and reviewing Spill Prevention Control & Countermeasure (SPCC) plans.
- Assisting in reviewing regulations and identifying permits applicable to design, construction, and operation of various projects and facilities.
- Assisting in the preparation of environmental permit applications.
- Assisting in the preparation of technical reports.
- Ensuring compliance with company and site safety policies.
- All other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in environmental science, Geology, Biology, Soil Science, or a related natural science degree from an accredited program preferred.
- Active construction site experience preferred with an understanding of general construction practices including relationship dynamics between the prime contractor, subcontractors, and the owner (i.e. the client).
- Minimum 2 years of related professional experience preparing SWPPPs, conducting inspections and engaging stakeholders during active construction preferred.
- Current stormwater inspection certification consistent with Oregon Department of Environmental Quality or Wahington Department of Ecology, or ability to obtain within 2 weeks of employment.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to clearly communicate both verbal and written technical information.
- Basic knowledge of environmental site assessment methods.
- Basic knowledge of environmental compliance and compliance audits.
- Basic knowledge of the environmental permitting process.
- Basic knowledge of GPS and experience working in the ArcGIS desktop environment is preferred.
- Must be proficient in the use of computer software (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Must meet standards to qualify for and maintain the Company's vehicle driving privileges as outlined in the Company's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy.
- Valid driver's license is required.
- Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship) in the country where this position is located.
