Job Responsibilities/Duties
Hanford Tank Waste Operations & Closure (H2C) delivers exceptional performance in safely removing, treating, and disposing of tank waste. H2C leads the nation's largest and most complex radioactive waste cleanup, including closure of the legacy waste tanks at Hanford containing 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste.

H2C is seeking a Hazardous Material Specialist to join the Waste Technical Services organization. The Hazardous Materials Specialist will provide waste designation, characterization and program support for all radiological and non-radiological waste types (Low Level Waste, High Level Waste, Mixed Waste). This position will provide broad-based technical and regulatory support for ongoing H2C waste management efforts and technical support for specific projects.
The Hazardous Material Specialist will also perform calculations to support waste management and characterization efforts and create and identify documentation to be revised based on the regulations, results of calculations and other efforts. Support effective implementation and regulatory compliance of waste management programs.
The Hazardous Material Specialist's duties and responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Perform waste designations in accordance with WAC
173-303 regulations - Assists with preparation of waste stream profile technical documentation to support calculations and incorporates into Waste Certification Plans
- Assists with providing guidance and direction to facility personnel involved with waste management, packaging, and transportation
- Performs field walk downs to ensure field work is performed to meet waste stream profiles, calculations and procedures
- Reviews work packages for potential generation of waste streams
- Assists with verification for compliance with H2C waste acceptance criteria requirements
- Assists with preparation of Waste Program manuals and procedures
- Provide leadership to less experienced specialists and facility personnel on waste management
Grade 18:
- Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in a scientific discipline or a related field; and
- Seven (7) years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Grade 19:
- Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in a scientific discipline or a related field; and
- Nine (9) years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Grade 20:
- Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in a scientific discipline or a related field; and
- Ten (10) years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- Experience with application of Washington State, Department of Energy (DOE) and Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). and requirements.
- Good written/oral communication skills.
In accordance with the company's philosophy on compensation for exempt and salaried non-exempt employees, H2C takes into consideration a variety of factors when determining initial grade and salary to include assigned job scope and responsibility, a candidate's qualifications as compared to internal comparators performing in a similar role, and the external labor market. A salary offer will be made at the appropriate grade level and within the targeted hiring range posted according to these factors.
Note a candidate's prior salary history will not be taken into consideration.
Hiring Range Minimum: $109,013
Hiring Range Maximum: $166,263
