The Rigging Engineer reports to the Maintenance Programs Manager and is responsible for engineering, planning, and oversight of complex lifting, hoisting, and rigging operations to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient material handling activities. This role provides technical authority for lift planning, rigging design, load path analysis, and compliance with applicable codes, standards, and site procedures. The Rigging Engineer works closely with operations, construction, maintenance, safety, and subcontractors to support routine, critical, and engineered lifts.

Responsibilities

Engineering Support:

  • Develop and review engineered lift plans, including critical, heavy, and complex lifts
  • Perform load calculations, center‑of‑gravity determinations, and stability analyses
  • Design and verify rigging configurations, including slings, spreader bars, lifting beams, shackles, and specialty devices
  • Evaluate crane configurations, capacities, and load charts for mobile, tower, gantry, and overhead cranes
  • Conduct load path analysis and identify structural or operational constraints

Field & Execution Support:

  • Participate in field walkdowns, lift planning meetings, and pre‑job briefings
  • Observe and support execution of routine and engineered lifts
  • Assist with verification of rigging equipment, lift setup, and load paths
  • Support coordination between engineering, operations, construction, and safety teams

Safety & Compliance:

  • Ensure lifting operations comply with applicable standards (ASME, OSHA, DOE, site‑specific requirements)
  • Participate in hazard analyses, lift briefings, and pre‑job walkdowns
  • Provide technical input for Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs)
  • Support incident investigations and corrective action development related to lifting events

Documentation & Program Support:

  • Maintain lift plan files, calculations, and engineering records
  • Support updates to hoisting and rigging procedures, standards, and templates
  • Assist with data collection for lessons learned and continuous improvement

Execution Support:

  • Support construction, maintenance, and operations teams during lift execution
  • Provide field oversight for high‑risk or first‑of‑a‑kind lifts
  • Review subcontractor lift plans and rigging submittals
  • Coordinate with crane operators, riggers, supervisors, and safety professionals
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural, Industrial, or Mechanical Engineering, or other technical discipline, and minimum of 7 years of experience in an industrial environment with 2 years of hoisting and rigging experience
  • OR Technical/Associate’s degree and minimum of 9 years of experience in an industrial environment with 2 years of hoisting and rigging experience
  • OR High School Diploma/GED and minimum of 11 years in an industrial environment with 2 years of hoisting and rigging experience
Preferred Qualifications & Experience
  • Experience in DOE, nuclear, refinery, heavy industrial, or EPC environments
  • Familiarity with critical lift programs and high‑consequence operations
  • Experience using engineering calculation tools and 3‑D CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Solid Works, Autodesk Inventor)
Physical Requirements

The Rigging Engineer will primarily perform desk work, including writing, computer workstation processes, and telephone operation, and will also conduct field activities such as inspections, testing, and equipment operations, which require walking, standing, bending, and turning while wearing personal protective equipment. Occasional loading, transport, and unloading of tools and supplies is required. The position requires working on the Construction Site located 22 miles north of Richland, following a 4 x 10 schedule, M‑Th 6:30a.m. to 5p.m. Applicants must be authorized to work and remain in the United States without Amentum visa sponsorship, must pass a pre‑employment drug screen and background check, and must obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site.
