Bechtel is designing, constructing, and commissioning the world’s largest radioactive waste treatment plant at the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington. The project will vitrify 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste using advanced technology.
Job SummaryThe HLW Mechanical Field Engineer will perform construction engineering tasks within the piping/mechanical discipline, including developing work plans, interpreting vendor drawings and manuals, coordinating materials, performing inspections, documenting progress, and resolving design and construction conflicts.
Major Responsibilities- Coordinate with engineering on constructability and design issues for mechanical equipment and related systems.
- Develop work plans, coordinate materials, perform and document inspections, report progress, and resolve conflicts in design and construction related to installation and testing of piping/mechanical equipment.
- Provide field engineering support to superintendents and personnel to keep cost and time schedules on track, verify materials and equipment, and ensure compliance with design requirements.
- Lead within a team-oriented environment.
- Prepare material take-offs for field-purchased piping and equipment.
- Support field procurement in inspection and receipt of piping and pipe support materials.
- Review construction drawings and schedules.
- Interface with survey team for laser scanning and general layout of equipment and piping installations.
- Review specifications, procedures, inspection reports, delivery schedules, vendor manuals, and technical data.
- Develop pressure test packages, perform testing, witness, and document test acceptance.
- Coordinate subcontractor work efforts and interface with client personnel as required.
- Interface with the Construction Automation group and Project Controls; take off quantities from drawings, provide input to quantity tracking applications, and report weekly installed quantities.
- Perform constructability reviews of engineering design and resolve issues with engineering and fabricators.
- Use TEAMWorks to verify accurate data from engineering and suppliers.
- Promote a safe work environment and support Bechtel’s Zero Accident Program.

- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction, or related field from an accredited university and 1–2 years of field engineering experience, or 5–6 years of directly related experience in lieu of a degree.
- Authorized to work and remain in the United States without Bechtel visa sponsorship now or in the future.
- Must complete and pass a pre‑employment drug screen, physical (if located at the construction site), and background check, including verification of employment and education.
- Must obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site; even if teleworking, must be able to comply with security requirements to obtain a badge.
- Non‑U.S. citizens from countries identified by the Department of Energy as posing heightened security concerns are subject to additional security requirements that limit site access.
- Physical ability to conduct field inspections and participate in project walk-downs, including extensive walking, climbing ladders, using fall protection, walking on elevated platforms, navigating uneven surfaces, and maneuvering in confined spaces.
- Experience interpreting specifications, procedures, vendor drawings, installation instructions, and codes in a field construction environment.
- Understanding of piping P&, isometrics, and pipe support drawings.
- Scoping, preparation, execution, and restoration of mechanical systems and equipment (motors, cranes, hoists, rails).
