Job Duties / Scope Of Work

  • Provide technical expertise to develop, formalize, and execute activities for the Transuranic (TRU) Program at the Hanford Site.
  • Support the WP&O organization in the characterization, data reconciliation, certification, and shipping of radioactive waste in accordance with CPCCo operating policies, procedures, and principles.
  • Research historical facility processes, Acceptable Knowledge (AK) information, waste designations, and nondestructive assay/exam documentation, and perform data reconciliations to support waste disposition decisions.
  • Perform waste profile and shipment reviews for the TRU Program to ensure compliance with waste acceptance requirements and applicable regulatory and site requirements.
  • Provide technical support for implementation of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC), including chemical compatibility and oxidizer evaluations for TRU waste streams, and review evaluations prepared for incoming waste.
  • Resolve routine to moderately complex technical issues related to waste characterization, documentation, and compliance, escalating more complex issues as needed.
  • Review and evaluate technical data for completeness, accuracy, and consistency, and identify discrepancies or information gaps requiring further resolution.
  • Prepare and revise technical documentation, work instructions, and supporting materials related to TRU waste characterization, certification, and shipment activities.
  • Interface with internal organizations and outside agencies to communicate technical information and requirements, as needed.
  • Support audits, assessments, and reviews by gathering records, preparing technical information, and responding to questions within assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Contribute to the improvement of work processes, documentation quality, and data accuracy to support safe, compliant, and efficient program execution.
  • Provide guidance and knowledge sharing to less experienced personnel as appropriate.
Basic Qualifications
  • Career Level Grade 16:
    Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience with 5 or more years of relevant experience.
  • Career Level Grade 17:
    Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience with 6 or more years of relevant experience.
Desired Qualifications
  • Chemical Engineering or other scientific or technical degree.
  • Experience with waste programs, including familiarity with radiochemistry and radio chemical separations.
  • Experience with the treatment, characterization, packaging, and disposal of dangerous and radioactive solid waste.
  • Familiarity with Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) implementing regulations.
  • Familiarity with the WIPP WAC and TRU waste characterization requirements.
  • Experience searching and validating databases and historical records to support technical evaluations.
  • Background in research, data analysis, and data reconciliation.
  • Experience reviewing technical documentation for quality, accuracy, and compliance.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical or scientific information effectively, both verbally and in writing.
