Test Engineer, Research Scientist, Electronics Technician
Overview
PNNL’s Detection Physics (DP) group develops detection systems and data analysis techniques for missions ranging from fundamental physics to national security. The group supports a range of research projects, from treaty verification to dark matter and neutrino physics, and provides hands‑on support for design, fabrication, testing, and laboratory operations.
Responsibilities- Support technicians, scientists, and engineers throughout the R&D process, including design, fabrication, testing, and laboratory operations.
- Assisting with cleanroom operations.
- Operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting cryogenic, gas processing, vacuum, chemical, and industrial systems.
- Participating in system assembly, design, testing, and oversight to support research and development activities.
- Operating hand tools, electronic test equipment, data acquisition systems, and radiation detection equipment for testing and laboratory operations.
- Performing work safely in challenging environments, including radiological, cleanroom, chemical, and hazardous settings.
- Working independently with minimal supervision and taking ownership of tasks, laboratory spaces, and equipment design and operation.
- High school diploma/GED and 4 years of relevant experience OR Technical Institute Graduate (TIG)/relevant AA degree or higher and 2 years of relevant experience.
- Preferred:
Experience operating and supporting work within a regulated cleanroom environment. - Experience with maintenance and operation of radiation detectors.
- Experience with gas/chemical/industrial systems.
- Ability to perform hands‑on work in a laboratory or technical setting.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to interpret and adhere to strict protocols, procedures, and quality standards.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
Laboratory work includes vacuum systems, pressurized gases, cryogenics, electronics, clean rooms, radiation sources, and control/measurement systems. Routine lifting of heavy items, gowning and movement in a clean‑room environment, and standing for long periods of time are required.
Additional Information- Position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance, including a background investigation and drug testing for Testing Designated Positions (TDP).
- U.S. citizenship is required.
- Applicants will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified material in accordance with 10 CFR 710, Appendix
B. - All security clearance positions are testing designated positions with pre‑employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with federal law.
Minimum salary: USD $30.58 per hour. Maximum salary: USD $45.91 per hour. Benefits include health, dental, vision, telehealth, mental health support, and other standard benefits available to eligible employees.
