Job SummaryThe HLW Piping Field Engineer is responsible for activities relating to construction engineering within the Piping/Mechanical discipline. This position will handle a variety of construction tasks utilizing nuclear codes and standards related to pipe, equipment and machinery installations. Responsibilities include development of work plans; interpreting vendor installation drawings and manuals; coordinating materials; performing and documenting inspections; reporting progress; and resolving conflicts in design and construction related to installation and testing of mechanical equipment and piping commodities.
MajorResponsibilities
- Coordinate with engineering on constructability and design issues related to mechanical equipment and systems.
- Develop work plans, coordinate materials, perform and document inspections, report progress, and resolve conflicts related to the installation and testing of piping/machinery.
- Provide leadership in a team‑based environment.
- Oversee the activities of assigned construction engineers.
- Direct the preparation of material take‑offs for field‑purchased piping and equipment.
- Review requisitions for field purchases.
- Support field procurement in inspection and receipt of piping and pipe support materials.
- Review the preparation of construction drawings and schedules.
- Assist Field Engineers and Superintendents in interpreting design and vendor drawings, monitoring pipe commodity delivery, storage, and installation.
- Interface with the survey team for laser scanning, as‑built and general layout for equipment and piping installations.
- Review specifications, procedures, inspection reports, delivery schedules, vendor manuals and technical data.
- Develop pressure test packages, perform witnessing, and document test acceptance.
- Coordinate with subcontractor work efforts and client personnel when required.
- Interface with the Construction Automation group and Project Controls; perform take‑offs from Issued for Construction drawings, provide input to quantity‑tracking applications, and report weekly installed quantities to Project Controls.
- Perform constructability reviews of engineering designs and resolve issues with engineering and fabricators.
- Use TEAMWorks to verify accurate data from engineering and suppliers.

- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction, or a related field from an accredited university and 1‑2 years of field engineering experience, OR equivalent experience of 5‑6 years.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.
- Must pass pre‑employment drug screen, physical (if on site), and background check.
- Must obtain a Department of Energy security badge for access to the Hanford Site.
- Non‑U.S. citizens from certain countries may face additional security requirements limiting site access.
- Must be physically capable of conducting field inspections and project walk‑downs, including extensive walking, ladder use, scaffolding, fall protection, elevated platforms, uneven surfaces, and confined spaces.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience interpreting specifications, procedures, vendor drawings, installation instructions, and codes in a field construction environment.
- Understanding of piping P&, isometrics, and pipe support drawings.
- Scoping, preparation, execution, and restoration of mechanical systems and equipment.
- Collaboration with diverse construction disciplines, craftsmen, and oversight organizations.
- Completion and passing of required pre‑employment checks and badge acquisition.
- Experience with piping and pipe support installation, inspection, and pressure testing.
- Knowledge of ASME B31.3, ASME Section VIII, Division 1 and related ASTM standards.
