Job Responsibilities/Duties
Hanford Tank Waste Operations & Closure (H2C) manages one of the most challenging radioactive waste cleanup projects in the country. The H2C mission is to safely store, retrieve, and treat 53 million gallons of legacy radioactive and hazardous waste stored in 177 underground tanks on the Hanford Site located in Richland, WA. Join us today and be a part of history!
The Tank Waste Inventory and Characterization (TWIC) organization mission is to deliver reliable waste inventory estimates for the Hanford tank farms by maintaining detailed tank was characterizations and to provide comprehensive data to support decisions on tank safety, waste management, and environmental protection through quality-focused waste sampling and analysis plans. To this end, TWIC updates and maintains the Best-Basis Inventory (BBI), which is the official tank waste inventory at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Hanford Site.
H2C seeks a Chemical Engineer responsible for preparing BBI and integrating characterization data, process knowledge, and surveillance data to estimate double-shell and single-shell tank waste composition by phase. This scope includes working with a suite of tools to aid in producing BBI inventories. In addition, this position will maintain the BBI database and other associated tools including but not limited to characterization reports, means and confidence intervals, tank waste inventory, and sample data.
Further activities include preparing sampling and analysis plans and data quality objectives for waste sampling and characterization events for H2C; integrating with analytical laboratories; interpreting chemical data for outside organizations; and coordinating technical and programmatic sampling and characterization events with multiple internal and external interfacing organizations and stakeholders.
Duties include:
- Develop chemical inventories of waste tanks using sample data, process knowledge, and model data.
- Create spreadsheets and supporting documents for process knowledge information or other applications as requested.
- Write sample and analysis plans for tank waste, environmental, and multi-media samples.
- Prepare and administer sampling program requirements via Quality Assurance documents, procedures, and assessments.
- Review and reconcile characterization data (analytical, radio chemical, and mineralogical).
- Develop clear, concise, and error-free engineering documents.
- Review and complete Corrective actions.
- Extensive knowledge of spreadsheets, solvers, and data comparison.
- Provide support for data uploads, review and comparison of analytical data, and addition of new/revised data.
- Obtain and maintain Engineering Technical Staff Qualification card.
