Data Scientist, Machine Learning/ ML Engineer
Responsibilities
Designs, develops, and implements methods, processes, and systems to analyze diverse data. Applies knowledge of statistics, machine learning, advanced mathematics, simulation, software development, and data modeling to integrate and clean data, recognize patterns, address uncertainty, pose questions, and make discoveries from structured and/or unstructured data. Produces solutions driven by exploratory data analysis from complex and high-dimensional datasets. Designs, develops, and evaluates predictive models and advanced algorithms that lead to optimal value extraction from the data.
Demonstrates ability to transfer skills across application domains.
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS/BA and 7+ years of relevant work experience – OR –
- MS/MA and 5+ years of relevant work experience – OR –
- PhD with 3+ years of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience applying machine learning and artificial intelligence (ML/AI) to unimodal and multimodal data found in open source, e.g. text, image, audio, video, graph, etc. Experience in the preprocessing steps, encoding the relevant modalities, and decoding for a variety of tasks.
- Experience developing, training, and testing machine learning models in frameworks like PyTorch and cloud-based environments, such as AWS, Azure, and Databricks.
- Experience packaging and deploying software, including data ingest, ML/AI, and UI, via cloud-based solutions.
- Ability to contribute knowledge to the academic and research strength of PNNL and have experience writing scientific publications demonstrating their insight and discovery (e.g., publication in conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, KDD, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, ACL, ICWSM, EMNLP, NAACL, EACL, COLING, and SIGIR is preferred).
- 5+ years of experience with natural language processing, computer vision, or signals processing in academia or industry.
- 7+ years in machine learning or applied science/research in academia or industry.
- 7+ years of experience with a general‑purpose programming language (Python, R, Julia, Java, C, C++, etc.).
- Experience working with sensitive data preferred.
- Ability to obtain a Federal Q Clearance and maintain such clearance.
- Experience in proposal writing and acquiring external funding.
- Experience leading small to medium‑sized teams (5+ staff) to accomplish applied technical tasks.
- Experience briefing research to a non‑technical audience.

- Background Investigation:
