Overview

At PNNL, our core capabilities are divided among major departments referred to as directorates. The Science & Technology directorates include National Security, Earth and Biological Sciences, Physical and Computational Sciences, and Energy and Environment. In addition, we have an Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a Department of Energy Office of Science user facility housed on the PNNL campus. The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads critical research in four areas:
Atmospheric, Climate & Earth Sciences, Biological Sciences, Environmental Molecular Sciences, and Global Change. Our vision is to develop a predictive understanding of biological and Earth systems in transition, including energy and material flows, the response of biosystems to environmental and genomic changes, and modeling the Earth system from the subsurface to the atmosphere.

The Biological Sciences Division has 17 collaborative, interdisciplinary biology-based teams that tackle major challenges in ecosystem sustainability, bioenergy, human health, and national security. Teams use unique field sites, advanced instrumentation, and integrated computational approaches to explore molecular-scale processes, advance molecular measurement capabilities, uncover the structure and function of molecular dark matter, identify control points in complex systems, and develop domain-aware AI to accelerate discovery.

Responsibilities

The Translational Omics research group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking an undergraduate intern to support its sample preparation laboratory needs. The group develops and applies diverse protein/peptide extraction techniques for mass spectrometry‑based omics technologies in studies of health and disease, the environment, and general systems biology. Particular strengths include applications involving very small sample sizes and high‑throughput processing of large numbers of biological samples.

The candidate must be motivated, a self‑starter, and interested in expanding their background while working in a highly dynamic, team‑based environment. Excellent verbal, listening, and written communication skills and extreme attention to detail are required. The intern will support biological sample preparation capabilities in the Biological Sciences Facility (BSF) by performing tasks such as laboratory cleanup, inventory of consumable supplies, labeling of vials, maintenance of freezer space, parts organization, cleaning dishes, buffer preparation, autoclave operation, and more.

The intern will also be an active part of ongoing research projects, assisting scientists with sample preparation methods and discovering the wide variety of science supported in the lab.
