Overview
At PNNL, core capabilities are divided into directorates focusing on specific scientific research areas. Our Science & Technology directorates include National Security;
Earth and Biological Sciences;
Physical and Computational Sciences; and Energy and Environment. The Energy and Environment Directorate delivers solutions for the nation's energy and environmental challenges. The Nuclear Sciences Division, part of the Energy and Environment Directorate, focuses on environmental management, national security, and nuclear energy.
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a postdoctoral research associate for the Nuclear Chemistry Team, supporting the Nuclear Sciences Division. The candidate will support a mass spectrometry capability in the Radiochemical Processing Laboratory (RPL).
The candidate will help build a gas phase actinide science capability at the RPL – a nuclear facility within PNNL. The team utilizes tandem mass spectrometry to measure actinide reaction kinetics and thermochemistry. The ideal candidate has experience applying physical chemistry techniques to measure chemical rates or physical constants (e.g., bond energies, ionization energies). Experience handling actinide or lanthanide materials is also considered.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:
- PhD received within the past five years (60 months) or to be awarded within the next eight months from an accredited institution.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD in chemistry, physics, radiochemistry, nuclear engineering, or a related field.
- Willingness to work with radioactive materials.
- Experience applying physical chemistry principles to experiments to determine physical measurables.
- Experience operating mass spectrometry experiments and maintaining instruments.
- Significant experience in gas phase spectroscopy, actinide/lanthanide coordination chemistry, or computational chemistry.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to work individually and as a team member.
Work occurs in the RPL, a nuclear facility, and includes work with radioactive materials.
