Overview
At PNNL, the Energy and Environment Directorate delivers science and technology solutions for the nation’s biggest energy and environmental challenges. The Energy Processes and Materials Division develops technologies for energy storage, advanced materials manufacturing, applied catalysis, and carbon capture, among others. This postdoctoral research associate position supports solid‑phase manufacturing of high‑temperature and composite materials for the Department of Energy and other clients.
Responsibilities- Research, plan, design, and conduct experiments involving solid‑phase processing methods such as friction stir processes, cold spray, and Shear‑Assisted Processing and Extrusion (ShAPE™) including additive manufacturing variants.
- Collaborate with partners to develop individual steps and combined processes for manufacturing composite materials and their finishing, treating, and strengthening.
- Conduct structural characterization (XRD, SEM, EDS, EBSD, TEM) and mechanical property evaluation (hardness, tensile, fatigue) and relate microstructure and properties to processing conditions.
- Document results in reports and peer‑reviewed publications.
Minimum Qualifications: PhD in materials science, mechanical engineering, or a related field earned within the past five (60) months or expected within the next eight months.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience with friction‑stir technologies, including processing, extrusion, deposition, and related high‑temperature severe plastic deformation.
- Hands‑on experience with manufacturing process machinery and ability to design or modify friction‑stir tools.
- Collaboration or experience in physical, mechanical metallurgy, and corrosion performance of Fe‑ and Ni‑based alloys or other high‑melting‑point materials.
- Proficiency in electron microscopy (SEM, TEM, EBSD, XRD) and mechanical testing (hardness, tensile, fatigue).
- Strong analytical, task‑management, and communication skills; ability to conduct independent and collaborative research.
- Experience in industrial organizations or internships and ability to provide innovative solutions.
