Position: Hot Cell Technician

Overview

The Nuclear Operations Technician, Level1 position is an entry‑level role in the Facilities & Infrastructure Operations (F&IO) Division of the Operational Systems Directorate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The role supports a range of research and development projects in hot cells, glove boxes, fume hoods and laboratory bench tops at the Radiochemical Processing Laboratory (RPL), High‑Level Radiochemistry Facility (HLRF) and Shielded Analytical Laboratory (SAL).

Responsibilities
  • Operate electromechanical manipulators in hot cells and perform related tasks under senior supervision.
  • Conduct analytical chemistry, including sampling, preparation, and measurement of radioactive materials.
  • Decontaminate radioactive materials and components using established procedures.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on radioactive systems and instrumentation.
  • Manage radiological waste, including documentation, monitoring and disposal.
  • Record and log facility system status and maintain accurate work records.
  • Operate and troubleshoot laboratory equipment in fume hoods, glove boxes, and on bench tops.
  • Support remote operations of hot cells, HLRF, and SAL hot cell complexes.
  • Conform to all conduct‑of‑operations, criticality safety, radiological, and waste‑management controls.
  • Assist in calibrating facility equipment and systems as required.
  • Execute all assigned duties safely, precisely, and in adherence to written procedures.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Technical Institute Graduate (TIG) / A.A. or higher.
  • Or high‑school diploma/GED with at least 2years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a facility that employs radiological controls.
  • Experience with research and development involving laboratory and wet‑chemistry methods.
Hazardous Working Conditions / Environment

Regular work with radioactive and other hazardous materials and waste. Tasks involve hot‑cell, fume‑hood, and glove‑box operations under strict safety protocols.

Eligibility and Security Clearance

Position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance. Applicants will undergo a background investigation in accordance with 10

CFR
710, Appendix
