Overview
PNNL’s Energy and Environment Directorate delivers science and technology solutions for the nation’s biggest energy and environmental challenges, supporting the Department of Energy (DOE) mission to modernize the power grid, advance renewable energy and efficiency technologies, and resolve complex issues in nuclear science. Within this directorate, the Applied Materials and Manufacturing group focuses on solid‐phase processing (SPP) to develop next‑generation metals manufacturing technologies that link fundamental science to scalable, high‑performance manufacturing platforms.
Responsibilities- Conduct hands‑on research using SPP technologies such as friction stir, additive manufacturing variants, shear‑assisted processing and extrusion (ShAPE), and cold spray.
- Operate and maintain processing equipment, design or modify tools and fixtures, and perform real‑time quality analysis.
- Characterize materials by mechanical testing, electron microscopy, and other analytical techniques, and interpret data to understand the relationship between processing conditions, microstructure, and performance.
- Develop material‑specific processing approaches, protocols, and parameters for advanced manufacturing.
- Prepare manuscripts for publication, communicate research findings internally and externally, and generate new research ideas.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, provide technical leadership, and contribute to project planning and execution.
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS/BA with at least 2 years of relevant experience, or MS/MA, or PhD in materials science, mechanical engineering, or related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Hands‑on experience with friction stir or other high‑temperature severe plastic deformation processes.
- Knowledge of Solid Works or similar CAD tools for tool and fixture design.
- Experience in AI/ML for materials and manufacturing solution development.
- Strong background in physical and mechanical metallurgy, corrosion performance of Fe and Ni alloys, or high‑melting‑point materials.
- Experience with automation, robotics, advanced controls, and real‑time quality analysis.
- Proficiency with electron microscopy, mechanical testing, and data analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong analytic, task‑management, and communication skills.
- Internships or industry experience in a relevant field.
This position requires the applicant to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and will be subject to a federal background investigation and pre‑employment drug testing. A sustained non‑use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months prior to hiring is required for clearance eligibility.
