The Plant IT organization is responsible for technical support to the Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) during Construction, Startup, and Commissioning and Operations. Plant IT activities include configuration management of information systems and support for Plant Management, Plant Engineering, Plant Operations, and other functions.
The Software Specialist is responsible for the development, operation, and maintenance of software applications and system interfaces. The role works with management, consultants, developers, vendors, and users to identify and prioritize software/system enhancements and defect resolution, supporting the computing needs of the Plant IT organization while adhering to software quality procedures and guidance.
The position executes activities that ensure optimum outputs are achieved in the most economic and safe manner while supporting the integrity and infrastructure of the department.
Under the day‑to‑day direction, control, and supervision of WTCC.
Major Responsibilities / Duties / TasksPrimary duties consist of the development, operations, and maintenance of software applications and database systems. The Software Specialist is assigned to support software and databases, working with application administrators and other database administrators to resolve production software problems.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Designing and implementing a robust monitoring, backup, and recovery plan for project databases
- Designing and implementing new or existing complex software application programs and reports according to project software standards and conventions and reviewing the work of others
- Ensuring automated data feeds and system interfaces are working as intended
- Proposing technical solutions to automate manual processes
- Performing maintenance activities including database design, data migration, script writing, and improvements
- Troubleshooting and resolving complex issues related to system interfaces
- Performing and overseeing software upgrades in accordance with software quality procedures
- Regularly interfacing with internal application users to identify emergent issues
- Assisting with the generation of metrics and/or reports
- Supporting Continuous Improvement efforts intended to improve the quality of existing software
- Supporting the Waste Treatment Plant Nuclear Safety Quality Culture by emphasizing the values of safety and quality in the performance of work to protect self, others, and the environment
- Performing minimal off‑hours work to ensure successful business application continuity

Requirements / Specifications Education- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, math, engineering, or an equivalent information technology field from a four‑year accredited college or university with 5 years of related work experience
- OR associate’s degree in computer science or information systems with 7 years of related work experience
- Candidate must be proficient in Microsoft application suite (e.g., Word, Excel, Access, Visio, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Candidate must have SQL and Oracle experience
- Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams
- Candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience in processing facilities, DOE facilities, or DOD facilities
- Experience with Linux operating systems
- Experience applying software quality engineering principles for management, design, and testing of software
- Programming experience with asp, Visual Basic, C++, and/or C# is highly desired
Office and field non‑manual: performs desk work, including writing, computer workstation processes, and telephone operation. Arranges for and/or performs presentations, oral reports, planning meetings, and other formal and informal contacts, requiring long periods of sitting.
