Overview
At PNNL, our core capabilities are divided among major departments referred to as Directorates. The Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate’s strengths in chemistry, materials science, advanced computing, applied mathematics, and data science support the discovery mission of the lab. The Advanced Computing, Mathematics, and Data Division focuses on basic and applied computing research including artificial intelligence, advanced analytics, and data engineering to build energy‑efficient computing systems and next‑generation algorithms for science, energy, and national security.
Responsibilities- Design, develop, document, test, and debug new and existing software systems, hardware/software interfaces, and applications in accordance with industry‑standard software engineering principles and best practices.
- Lead development teams by delegating tasks, managing deliverables, and communicating progress to leadership and stakeholders.
- Guide projects from concept and prototype through production deployment, ensuring a smooth transition across both agile and non‑agile environments.
- Translate complex technical ideas into clear, accessible information for diverse audiences.
- Mentor and develop team talent, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
- Analyze user needs to determine technical requirements and develop well‑crafted specifications.
- Integrate hardware with software, automate manual tasks, and consult end users to prototype, configure, refine, test, and debug programs or systems.
- Identify and evaluate new technologies or methods for implementation and continuous improvement.
- Minimum:
PhD and 3 years of software engineering experience OR MS/MA and 5 years OR BS/BA and 7 years OR AA and 16 years OR HS/GED and 18 years in designing, architecting, programming, deploying, and automating software solutions for scientific research or consumer digital product development. - Preferred:
Familiarity with the ASCR sector; experience with both agile and non‑agile software development; experience managing teams of developers and custom code design; demonstrated code development using AI.
