Overview
At Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), the AI and Data Analytics Division within the National Security Directorate drives data‑centric solutions for national security challenges. The team combines domain expertise with advanced hardware and software to accelerate the full software and system development life cycle and deliver actionable insights.
Responsibilities- An interest, curiosity, and technical depth to support and advance applied problems for the national security community.
- The ability and desire to learn new technologies in a rapidly evolving field.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Apply software engineering best practices with minimal oversight (clean code, version control, unit testing, debugging, code reviews, secure coding, documentation).
- Take initiative by setting clear personal goals, establishing priorities, and owning progress.
- Use AI tools effectively for coding, testing, and documentation while validating AI‑generated outputs for accuracy and security.
- Stay current on industry developments related to software engineering and AI.
- Work collaboratively within a team to execute the full software/system development life cycle.
- Maintain and follow quality assurance procedures.
- Demonstrate good time‑management skills.
- Work with a variety of existing and new technologies.
- Bachelor’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited institution.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
- Prior experience as a software engineer (designing and building production‑quality applications).
- Hands‑on experience developing software applications and prototypes using JavaScript, Type Script, React, or Python.
- Strong understanding of software engineering best practices and the full software development lifecycle.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to diverse audiences.
- Experience with Agentic AI and AI‑assisted development tools.
- Internship at a national laboratory preferred.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy security clearance.
- U.S. citizenship required.
