Job Description

SHIP SAFETY EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN

Richmond – Fleet Maintenance Unit

Fixed Term Casual

As a team player, you are a self-motivated individual with strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to communicate technical information effectively. You are responsible for servicing and maintaining firefighting, lifesaving, and other related shipboard safety equipment in accordance with regulatory and classification requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Remove, maintain, test, transport, and replace fixed and portable firefighting, safety, and lifesaving equipment in compliance with applicable regulations, including SCBA, fire suits, fire detection systems, fire station alarms and panels, fire doors and dampers, fire extinguishers, fire hoses, deluge/drencher/sprinkler and water mist systems, tank void vents, anti-flash screens, deck scupper systems, life jackets, liferings, 360-man overboard liferings, pyrotechnics, and line throwers.
  • Perform SCBA servicing and hydrostatic testing in accordance with regulatory and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Clean and maintain freshwater tanks, including chlorination and dichlorination of potable and non-potable onboard water systems.
Additional Duties
  • Prepare and complete safety equipment documentation and certification records for regulatory review and approval.
  • Support periodic inspections of onboard and shore-based fire protection and potable water systems.
  • Provide guidance to other employees as required.
  • Support Transport Canada and Classification Society regulatory inspections.
Qualifications
  • Basic knowledge of WCB regulations and safe working practices.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the marine industry.
  • Valid BC Driver’s Licence.
  • STCW Basic Safety and Advanced Firefighting MED certificates are required.
  • A Watchkeeping Mate Certificate is considered an asset.
  • Willingness to complete the required regulatory and technical training after appointment.
