Position Summary

The School of Trades and Technology is looking for a permanent Trades Shop Technician in the Carpentry program. The Carpentry Technician will provide self-directed technical support for the day-to-day operations of the Carpentry Trade. The successful candidate must be able to troubleshoot, solve problems, and repair tools and equipment under tight timelines. He or she will be required to support students and instructors in the School of Trades and Technology through the procurement of materials, supplies, and equipment as well as the installation, testing, and calibration of equipment.

This position will also support related activities throughout the School of Trades and Technology when required. This position is a permanent position and is required 5 days per week (35 hours).

Position

Responsibilities
  • Designs, prototypes, tests, modifies and delivers a wide range of custom-made projects to meet unique specifications.
  • Cuts student materials, stores and distributes materials as required.
  • Procures materials and tools as required.
  • Receives supplies of materials and other goods and arranges for proper storage.
  • Sets up and disassembles a variety of equipment and complex mock-ups.
  • Troubleshoots equipment and tool issues under tight timelines.
  • Conducts regular maintenance and repairs of the Shop facilities and equipment.
  • Consults, researches, designs and fabricates and/or modifies equipment as requested by the Technical Services Manager and Instructors.
Required Qualifications
  • Journeyperson Trade certificate and/or 2-year ASET creditable engineering technology in Electrical.
  • Troubleshooting experience in a modern lab setting.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Sound decision-making ability and problem-solving skills.
  • Experienced in working successfully either as a part of a team or individually
  • Willingness to learn and keep up to date on technology, and advance skills through courses and PD opportunities.
  • Redesigns present lab equipment to meet changing needs of the learner.
  • Keeps current with Safety regulations & communicates expectations and changes to colleagues, instructors, and students
  • Maintains the safety policy with all the Trades Shop/Lab facilities.
  • Checks and maintains safety equipment.
  • Explains and enforces Safety procedures to individuals using the Shop/Lab facilities. Disposes of hazardous waste in storage areas using proper procedures.
  • Supports maintaining SDS inventory and WHMIS records.
  • Purchases and maintains accurate inventories of consumables, materials and equipment for the department.
