Overview

This is skilled shop and field mechanical work at the journeyman level in the maintenance, overhaul and repair of a variety of automotive and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, as well as small equipment items. The incumbent may supervise and check the work of one or more subordinates performing mechanical and related duties as required.

Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Diagnosing vehicle failures and potential impacts to other vehicle subsystems.
  • Performing multiple level preventative maintenance program services and commercial vehicle inspections.
  • Installing, upgrading and repairing motors, rear and front-end assemblies, steering, hydraulic, electrical, brake and fuel management systems.
  • Performing a wide variety of general mechanical and other repairs on vehicles and equipment.
  • Gas and electrical welding tasks.
  • Operation of vehicles and equipment into position for repair and overhaul.
  • Performing various outfitting activities on new vehicles and equipment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the automotive and heavy-duty mechanical trade.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and proper safety precautions related to the work performed.
  • Skill in performing electrical diagnostic and associated repairs.
  • Skill in the use of various computer applications, including the Microsoft Office suite, IPS (Infor Public Sector) as well as various fleet management software systems (e.g. FASTER).
  • Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment used in the trade. Ability to correctly diagnose and complete repairs effectively and in a manner which avoids call-backs or repeat/related failures.
  • Ability to perform independently with minimal supervision and with considerable independence in judgement, action and initiative on all aspects of the job is required.
  • Ability to work as a team player, including supporting and advising other technicians as well as assuming and following through on repair activities commenced by other technicians.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written assignment, instructions and work from blueprints, diagrams, and sketches.
  • Ability to perform a variety of skilled mechanical and related tasks in the overhaul, repair, maintenance, upgrading, and adjustment of a wide variety of small landscape maintenance equipment, heavy duty, commercial transport, automotive and agricultural equipment and implements as well as current technology vehicles, including pressure fuel engines and hybrid/electric technology.
  • Ability to keep up to date with changing technology.
  • Ability to supervise, assign, and allocate work to others if required.
  • Ability to effectively provide direction, guidance, advice, orientation and mentorship to staff engaged in routine tasks on work related protocols, practices and policies; listen and respond to concerns.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City staff, contractors and members of the general public.
  • Ability to successfully clear a Police Information Check.
Qualifications and

Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by a completed apprenticeship in the Automotive, Heavy Duty or Commercial Transport Mechanic trade program and 2 to 5 years related journeyman experience OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • B.C. Certificate of Trade Qualification as an Automotive, Heavy Duty or Commercial Transport Mechanic.
  • Valid Class 3 Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia with Air Endorsement.
  • CVIP Certification with air endorsement. Liquid Propane Gas Pressure Fuel Ticket
Working Conditions:

Job is physical in nature, requiring routine light and heavy physical effort, manual dexterity and extended periods of mental concentration. Exposure to dust, dirt, toxic chemicals and fumes.

Hours of Work: 7:00am-4:30pm or 3:30pm-1:00am, Monday-Friday
