SUMMARY/OBJECTIVES
The Universal Banker serves as a full-service, single point of contact in the branch for South State customers’ financial needs. The position operates in the dual capacity of a Teller and FSR, providing exceptional customer service in both transactional and account management, and seeks to attract, expand, and retain customer relationships while contributing to the bank’s financial growth.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Serves customers quickly, accurately, efficiently, and confidentially according to the South State Bank Service Standards.
- Knows and understands the products and services offered by the Bank, including facts, features, benefits, pricing, and definitions.
- Identifies customer needs and expectations by listening for clues.
- Opens opportunities to expand customer relationships by making referrals as outlined in the position goals.
- Maintains a neat and professional personal appearance in accordance with bank policy.
- Ensures compliance with all banking regulations, including Regulation CC and the Bank Secrecy Act.
- Develops a strong understanding of customer‑facing technology and can discuss and enroll customers in self‑service options.
- Processes transactions for savings, checking, and loan accounts.
- Maintains a neat and orderly work area.
- Assists in guiding and training new tellers.
- Provides customers access to safe deposit boxes.
- Cashes checks and processes savings withdrawals within assigned limits and prescribed procedures.
- Sells certified checks.
- Balances transactions daily.
- Serves/balances ATM and utilizes the branch capture system as required.
- Follows policies and procedures to minimize operational errors and maintain proper workflow.
- Adheres to branch security and audit procedures and understands security device operations.
- Opens new deposit accounts and understands the products and financial services offered by the bank.
- Handles additional services such as stop payments, wire transfers, and other maintenance functions within assigned limits.
- Explains policies and procedures to customers, considering their possible unfamiliarity.
- Resolves customer problems and complaints with courtesy and discretion; directs complex issues to appropriate parties.
- Views problems as opportunities to satisfy the customer and promote additional services.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the bank’s financial services and shows sincere appreciation for each customer’s time and business.
- Provides a business card if not already given.
- Ensures branch records, reports, and correspondence from customer development attempts are correct, timely, and properly distributed.
- Follows security and audit procedures and understands security device operations.
Minimum qualifications:
One year of teller or cash handling experience and six months of customer relationship building or sales experience.
Demonstrated expertise in Teller II and basic FSR job functions.
Additional responsibilities may include Vault or Back‑Up Vault duties, and other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS- Education:
High School diploma or equivalent. - Experience:
Cash handling, sales, customer service; previous banking experience preferred. - Specific Knowledge:
Good interpersonal and computer skills; ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.

- Additional training may be required depending on experience.
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Must be able to stand and/or sit for long periods of time. Must effectively access and interpret information on computer screens, documents, reports, cash denominations, and identify customers.
WORK ENVIRONMENTThe position is most likely in an open lobby area with an individual workstation, in a cooled and heated facility.
TRAVELTravel may be required to attend meetings or training as needed.
