Electrician II

The CDPH’s Richmond Campus is a 29‑acre property housing over 1,200 employees, located in Richmond’s Marina Bay and just minutes from the El Cerrito Del Norte and Richmond BART stations, with free shuttle service between the campus and the El Cerrito Del Norte BART station. The campus includes offices, laboratories, and a warehouse. This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by performing all the electrical utilities and power distribution duties to support the operations and maintenance systems at the Richmond Laboratory Campus. The Electrician II serves as the lead electrician at the CDPH Richmond Campus. This position is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of all electrical systems and equipment throughout the campus, including laboratories, office spaces, and critical infrastructure.

The incumbent works on systems rated up to 480V 3‑phase and below, including dedicated circuits, emergency power systems, and low‑voltage infrastructure. Responsibilities also include maintaining and troubleshooting solar power equipment, parking lot lighting, and low‑voltage systems such as CCTV, access control, and fire/life safety devices. The position must maintain training according to CDPH policies and procedures and OSHA guidelines (Example NFPA
70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace).

The Electrician II acts as the lead worker for CDPH Electrician I and provides oversight and coordination for Building Maintenance Workers (BMW), Maintenance Mechanics (MM), and Stationary Engineers (SE) when they are assigned to assist with electrical or related facility operations. The incumbent ensures all work is performed in compliance with applicable codes, safety standards, and departmental procedures.

The incumbent works under the direction of the Supervisor of Building Trades (SBT) of the Maintenance Unit.

This classification is eligible for a recruitment and retention pay differential for the Greater Bay Area at 5% above the base rate for each qualifying pay period.

This is a 12‑month Limited‑Term Full‑Time position that may be extended or become permanent.

- Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications for the classification but do not currently have eligibility on an employment certification list by having taken and passed an examination may apply as a TAU. TAU appointments are limited to a duration of 9 months within a 12 consecutive month period. In order for a TAU appointment to become permanent, individuals must take and pass the related examination, and thereby become eligible from a certification list, within 9 months of TAU appointment.

Individuals who successfully obtain eligibility prior to the expiration of the TAU appointment will not be required to re‑compete in a competitive process for permanent appointment to that position.***
