The Trauma Registrar is responsible for the collection, completion, and verification of the accuracy of all patient data collected for the purposes of Reid Health’s Trauma Registry data collection system. This position is crucial to the implementation of quality assurance and improvement issues by serving as the foundation of the Trauma Program. The Registrar creates and maintains clinical and statistical data, AIS coding, ICD‑10‑CM codes, and abstracts various data elements as required by the American College of Surgeons, the National Trauma Data Standards, Trauma Quality Improvement Program, the Indiana State Trauma Registry, and Reid Health.
The Registrar will provide data and statistics from the trauma registry to the Trauma Program Manager and the Trauma Medical Director to base injury prevention and community education upon. As time allows, the Registrar will assist the Trauma Program Manager with trauma outreach efforts. This position is held accountable by the standards of the trauma registry.
- Must have comprehensive knowledge of the nursing process and nursing practice and their application, including principles of safety and infection control (trends, practice and application).
- Assures standards of Indiana State Department of Health, Indiana Department of Homeland Security, DNV, American College of Surgeons and other regulatory agencies are met.
- Must possess critical thinking skills.
- Possesses awareness of health care delivery systems and level of educational preparation of health care providers.
- Collects and enters data into the trauma registry regarding trauma patients for the trauma program in a timely manner.
- Collaborates with staff members to ensure the accuracy of the data entered in the trauma patient registry.
- Assigns and scores all injuries utilizing the AIS and ICD‑10 scoring system.
- Completes and verifies for accuracy all data collected.
- Evaluates the documentation of hospital staff/providers and identifies missing data elements. Coordinates with lead trauma registrar/operational PI coordinator and Trauma Program Manager to correct and obtain the information on the hospital record. Reconciles the data as the information becomes available.
- Ensures compliance with the National Trauma Data Standards (NTDS) and the Indiana Department of Health required standards.
- Participates as an integral member of the trauma quality improvement team.
- Compiles and analyzes administrative reports for regulatory agencies, hospital departments and/or committees as directed by program leadership.
- Works with the program leadership collaborating as an advisor for development of the hospital multidisciplinary team.
- High School Education
- Proficient in data entry
- Clinical experience as an EMT, paramedic and/or background in coding preferred
- Successful completion of trauma registrar course within 9 months of hire.
- Successful completion of AAAM AIS course within 9 months of hire.
