Description

Fort Boonesborough State Park, where history comes alive, is an important part of the Nation’s Finest Park System, the Kentucky State Parks. We have the satisfaction of working often in an office without walls to provide an up-close and personal historic experience along with enjoyable overnight camping and recreational day use.

The Parks Program Supervisor is a valued team member whose duties of researching, developing and providing interpretive and recreational programming are for the benefit of all our visitors.

This position is a full time 37.5 hours per week job. It has benefits such as paid sick time, paid vacation time and paid holidays.

Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To The Following
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the 18th Century Fort Boonesborough replica.
  • Supervise and train the seasonal living historian interpretive staff and volunteers in pioneer skills and demonstrate those skills themselves as needed.
  • Plan, organize and supervise numerous living history interpretive special events every year.
  • Provide educational interpretive programming for school field trips.
  • Conduct historic research to expand both living history interpretive programming and Park exhibits.
  • Maintain and inventory Park artifacts.
  • Provide interpretive programming as needed at the Kentucky River Museum and the campground.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of a busy gift shop located in the fort.
Skills and Expectations include but are not limited to the following
  • Knowledge and understanding of history, especially 18th Century Kentucky History.
  • Knowledge of historical interpretation methods.
  • Ability to teach others about historical interpretation.
  • Pioneer Skills of the 18th Century.
  • Computer Literacy.
  • Strong Recordkeeping.
  • Good Communication.
  • Dependability.
  • Retail Experience.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in recreation, outdoor recreation, park resource interpretation, physical education, history, environmental education, biology, forestry, botany, zoology, anthropology, archaeology, area studies, cultural studies, art history, geography, parks and recreation management or administration, sociology, paleo anthropology or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR

SKILLS:

Two years experience as a park naturalist, park interpreter, environmental educator, conservation educator, in planned outdoor recreation, or physical education.

Substitute EDUCATION for

EXPERIENCE:

A master's degree in recreation, park resource interpretation, physical education, history, environmental education, biology, forestry, botany, zoology, anthropology, archaeology, area studies, cultural studies, art history, geography, parks and recreation management or administration, sociology, paleo anthropology or a closely related field will substitute for one year of the required experience.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for

EDUCATION:

Related experience as a park naturalist, park interpreter, environmental educator, conservation educator, in planned outdoor recreation or physical education, recreation, park resource interpretation, history, environmental education, biology, forestry, botany, zoology, anthropology, archaeology, area studies, cultural studies, art history, geography, parks and recreation management or administration, sociology, paleo anthropology or a closely related field will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): NONE

Working Conditions

Work is primarily performed outdoors at an assigned park. Extensive contact with the public is required.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 9 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
