Responsibilities Include
  • Answer 911 and non-emergency phone lines for the communities serviced by the Regional Emergency Dispatch Center;
  • Interview callers to obtain essential information and record data on incidents as they develop;
  • Analyze calls for priority level of emergency response;
  • Broadcast calls for service to Law Enforcement/Fire/EMS;
  • Operate sophisticated computer-aided dispatch (CAD) computers, radio, and phone systems and accurately enter information;
  • Maintain composure and professionalism when dealing with callers during stressful or rapidly changing situations.
Requirements Include
  • Ability and willingness to work any shift assigned, including weekends and holidays;
  • Ability to endure a limited amount of leave during a six month training period;
  • Ability to operate sophisticated computerized equipment accurately and rapidly;
  • Ability to read maps as well as a general knowledge of the County’s geographical area, road systems, and landmarks;
  • Must be an action-oriented team player who thrives on adrenaline-inducing situations;
  • Ability to speak distinctly. Able to hear and distinguish between several voices at the same time while acquiring and retaining information such as names, numbers, and addresses;
  • Ability to deal courteously with the public under stressful conditions, including irate persons and emotional situations;
  • Skill in working under pressure of deadlines and establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with employees, officials, other agencies and the general public;
  • Strong ability to multi-task;
  • Successful completion of written exam, pre-employment background check, polygraph exam, drug screening, and base-line hearing test;
  • 18 years of age, High school diploma/GED;
  • Public Safety position employment application must be completed.
Selection Process
  • Application:
    Candidates whose applications indicate the required education and experience most directly related to the position will be invited to continue in the selection process.
  • Skills Assessment:
    Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to take a Skills Assessment exercise. The exercise simulates a generic dispatch environment and is designed to measure the abilities and skills critical for public safety dispatchers such as data entry, multitasking, prioritization, map reading, memory recall, and comprehension.
  • Personal History Questionnaire, Complete Background Investigation, Polygraph, and drug screen:
    Candidates who perform well in the Skills Assessment will receive a Personal History Questionnaire to complete. Review of candidates' Personal History Questionnaire and a thorough background investigation will be conducted. Candidates passing this process will be invited for oral interviews.
  • Oral Interview:
    Candidates selected after the oral interview must complete an alcohol/drug screening and a hearing examination.
