Job Description

As an Industrial Rehabilitation Nurse, you will perform clinical nursing services for workers’ compensation cases, including assessing, documenting, and treating injuries.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Complete assigned nurse referral tasks for clinical recommendations, including initial allowance, additional allowance, physician review/exam referrals, quality assurance reviews, ICD‑10 coding and description modification requests, and special medical functions.
  • Review and analyze subjective and objective evidence for medical indicators to determine causation related to the workplace injury/illness, identify claims requiring further clarification or physician review.
  • Serve as clinical subject matter expert on BWC medical service specialist (MSS) policies and procedures, and perform related duties as required.
  • Maintain data tracking processes and adhere to timeliness and quality standards for work performed; participate in quality reviews as assigned.
  • Participate in problem solving for medical or claim barriers by collaborating as part of a multidisciplinary team with BWC Claims, Managed Care Organization (MCO), injured worker, employers, and/or providers.
Qualifications

Current and valid license to practice professional nursing as a Registered Nurse (R.N.) in Ohio, issued by the Board of Nursing, with at least six months of licensed experience.

Knowledge of nursing, federal & state laws, BWC policies & procedures, case management strategies, ICD & ICD-10 codes, interviewing, public relations, medical techniques, and procedures.

Ability to interpret diagnoses, assess limitations, and write accurate medical reports based on claim data. Must read & comprehend medical charts, manuals and journals; understand medical policy and guidelines; handle routine inquiries from injured workers, employers, physicians, attorneys, government officials, providers, representatives and the general public.

Skill to independently review medical bills, analyze costs, and determine appropriateness.

Salary Information

Hourly wage is expected to be paid at step 1 of the pay range associated with the position for candidates who are new employees of the state. Current employees will be placed in the appropriate step based on union contract and/or Ohio Revised Code. Movement to the next step of the pay range (roughly 4% increase) occurs after six months, assuming job performance is acceptable.

This position does not offer supplemental or shift differential pay.

BWC 1199 Selection Rights

This position shall be filled in accordance with the provisions of the 1199 Collective Bargaining Agreement. BWC bargaining unit members have selection rights before non-bargaining unit members. All other applications will only be considered if a non-unit applicant is not selected for this position.

Educational Transcripts

For any educational achievements to be considered during the screening process, you must attach an unofficial transcript that details the coursework you have completed.

Valid R.N. License

This position requires a current & valid license to practice professional nursing as a registered nurse (i.e., R.N.) in Ohio, issued by the Board of Nursing pursuant to Section 4723.03 of Ohio Revised Code.

To remain in this classification after employment, incumbent is required to renew license on a biennial basis.
