Environmental Scientist II (FFTL)
The Division of Oil and Gas (EEC) seeks an Environmental Scientist II in the East Branch District (Perry County and surrounding areas). The candidate will assist with federal plugging projects by providing technical oversight to well plugging contractors, landowners, mineral owners, and other agencies.
Pay: $4,102.40 – $5,401.34 Monthly
Employment Type: Executive Branch, Full Time, Eligible for Overtime Pay, 18A, 37.5 HR/WK.
Location: Varies within the East Branch District. Telecommuting may be authorized; arrangement may be terminated or modified at any time.
Responsibilities- Evaluate Division, PVA, and other records to determine surface ownership related to orphaned oil and gas wells; prepare correspondence to affected surface owners regarding reclamation proposals and activities.
- Prepare reports and technical documents for the Division related to reclamation of orphaned well and tank sites; conduct inspections and oversee field activity as needed.
- Coordinate the seven‑day advance notice to surface owners for proposed plugging and cleanup activities at orphaned well and tank sites; document and file communications with Division records, and coordinate with field personnel on project status.
- Conduct research and determinations on current and previous operators of orphaned oil and gas wells and tanks; coordinate with the Office of Legal Services to provide related information and testify at cost‑recovery hearings.
- Knowledge about oil and gas wells.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Self‑motivated with excellent time‑management skills.
- Ability to interpret and enforce regulations and policies.
- Education: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor’s degree in a natural, biological, or physical science, or with at least twenty semester hours in such a science.

One year of experience in natural resources, environmental control, or a related area. - Substitute Education for

Work is primarily performed in an office setting but may involve field work with frequent statewide travel. Incumbents may be exposed to adverse weather, snakes, insects, water‑borne pathogens, broken glass, rusty metal, and hazards associated with the operation of electro‑fishing equipment. Safety procedures must be followed at all times. A valid driver’s license is required.
Environmental Scientist II positions are a federally funded time‑limited (FFTL) role. The position duration shall not exceed the life of the federal grant that funds the role. FFTL employees are considered unclassified (non‑merit) but are eligible to receive benefits at the same level as permanent classified employees.
