Position: Certified Senior Medical Assistant - Primary Care (Richmond/Aliana)

At Houston Methodist, the Senior Medical Assistant Certified (Sr. MA) position is responsible for functioning as an expert and demonstrating highly competent knowledge in advanced examinations and treatments necessary to provide high‑quality support of patient care and services. The Sr. MA works under the direct supervision of a Physician and/or Registered Nurse on assigned patient populations, oversees scope of practice (e.g., Hand Hygiene Validator, EMR super‑user), assists with patient examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, treatment, and dressing changes, performs general administrative duties in accordance with CLIA, HIPAA, NCQA and government standards, and may schedule appointments, ensure medical necessity compliance, and verify eligibility for care.

The role includes precepting and training other Medical Assistants, and serves as a clinical resource during shifts.

Essential Functions
  • People – Role models a positive work environment, leads problem resolution, facilitates teamwork, and mentors peers.
  • Service – Provides direct patient care under supervision, completes pre‑visit workflow, obtains vitals and documents history in the EMR, follows up on medications and lab results, coordinates care with other providers, and ensures patient self‑management through MyChart.
  • Quality & Safety – Reports observations, recognizes abnormal findings, performs routine tests (EKG, rapid strep, urinalysis, urine pregnancy tests), sterilizes instruments, and cleans exam rooms.
  • Finance – Manages supplies efficiently, stocks exam rooms, and prioritizes tasks to reduce overtime.
  • Growth & Innovation – Develops team skills, participates in professional development, contributes to performance improvement, and keeps the development plan updated.
Qualifications
  • Education – High School diploma or equivalent (GED, homeschool verification, or partial/complete post‑secondary education).
  • Experience – Five years medical assistant experience with highly complex, chronic disease management or in a specialty discipline.
  • Licenses & Certifications (Required) – Certified Medical Assistant (AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, NHA, Registered Medical Assistant, or EMT) and BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA).
  • Preferred Certifications – Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT, ACA).
