Brief

Job Description

The Security Officer II is responsible for maintaining a secure and protective environment at the facility by observing, taking action, reporting incidents or security violations involving residents, and initiating emergency responses as appropriate. Key duties include monitoring alarms and surveillance cameras, patrolling buildings and grounds, checking badges at gate entrances, and handling after‑hours emergency calls. The officer coordinates emergency responses, notifies management and law enforcement when needed, performs monthly fire extinguisher inspections, ensures appropriate lighting, and may train other security staff.

The role requires working at a facility serving individuals with complex needs, including aggressive or self‑injurious behaviors, under general supervision with moderate latitude for independent judgment.

Essential Job Functions (EJFs)
  • Attend work on a regular basis, may work specific or rotating schedules, extended shifts, and overtime as required.
  • Monitor surveillance cameras for unauthorized persons, fires, and unusual occurrences; report emergencies immediately.
  • Conduct routine patrols of buildings and grounds, taking action upon discovery of unauthorized persons or activities.
  • Respond to all fire alarms, investigate causes, take necessary emergency action, assist with fire drills, and conduct life safety checks.
  • Coordinate and disseminate emergency responses, notify facility management and law enforcement if appropriate.
  • Assist in apprehending suspects where reasonably possible in cases of unauthorized entry, malicious mischief, or other violations.
  • Prepare accurate documentation of emergencies and security violations.
  • Evaluate and recommend changes to security regulations.
  • Train, coach, and mentor new security officers as needed.
  • Attend mandatory training to maintain competence and develop professionally.
  • Participate in supporting disaster response, recovery, or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, possibly requiring alternate shift patterns or locations.

  • Knowledge of building security, surveillance equipment, admission and exit regulations, and alarm devices.
  • Skill in oral and written communication, including writing incident reports.
  • Ability to communicate with potentially aggressive residents, visitors, and employees.
  • Ability to patrol grounds, detect danger, and take appropriate action.
  • Physical ability to walk extensively, run occasionally, and assist in restraining during an emergency.
  • Ability to drive a state vehicle.
  • Ability to prepare concise reports.
  • Ability to train others.
  • Ability to remain calm and react quickly in emergencies.
  • Skill in defusing potentially difficult situations.
  • Skill in monitoring and assessing situations to determine appropriate response.
  • Knowledge of basic traffic and parking regulations.
Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications

Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license or obtain it within 90 days after hire. Applicants with an out-of-state license must provide an original certified driving record.

Initial Screening Criteria
  • High School diploma, GED, or 12 months of work experience (required).
  • Experience in security, law enforcement, or military (preferred).
  • Experience with individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities or mental health issues (preferred).
