Virginia Western Community College is a two‑year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System. The college is located on a 70‑acre campus in southwestern Roanoke, VA, and serves the communities of Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County.
OverviewThis role is the Biotechnology Project Vital Assistant. The position is a restricted, full‑time role contingent upon the conditions of the Go Virginia Project Vital grant, with funding secured from July 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027.
Responsibilities- Communication and coordination with K‑12 community partners to develop and execute STEM outreach events within K‑12 classrooms.
- Communication and coordination of meetings with biotechnology ecosystem leaders.
- Planning and execution of events such as VWCC’s STEM Day, STEM teacher summer trainings, summer camps, recruiting events, and field trips.
- Working with marketing to develop flyers and other event materials, and recording and reporting event metrics and tracking student research experiences.
- Collaborating with the VWCC Community College Access Program (CCAP) advising team and the Enrollment Center to inform high‑school graduates about biotechnology opportunities at VWCC.
- Supporting recruitment efforts for the Biotechnology program.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned, and to assist the agency or state government in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
Qualifications- Knowledge of basic principles of biotechnology, biology, and/or life sciences.
- Ability to coordinate speakers, high school tours, and outreach activities.
- Ability to conduct and lead outreach activities with diverse student populations.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team‑oriented environment with various departments and industry partners.
- Strong communication, documentation, organizational, scheduling, and record‑keeping skills.
- Ability to track and document data such as participation numbers.
- Experience in conducting STEM outreach events, speaking to small groups about STEM content, and building relationships with external partners.
- Experience using computers and software applications for record‑keeping, communication, and tracking purposes (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Experience performing basic clerical duties in a fast‑paced environment and providing customer service to diverse groups and partners.
- Experience planning, organizing, and scheduling events and meetings.
- Ability to work effectively in a high‑pressure, fast‑paced environment.
- Demonstrated ability to run small group activities, manage a classroom, and interact with middle school/high school students.
- Demonstrated ability to adapt or develop outreach activities and content to appropriate age‑based audiences.
- Coursework, training, and/or experience in a science‑related field.
