Assistant Project Manager

A family owned, veteran founded heavy civil construction company in Virginia is hiring an Assistant Project Manager to support active heavy civil and highway projects in the Richmond area. This contractor has operated for over 50 years, self performs heavy civil, heavy highway, site development, and utility work across Virginia and North Carolina, and is a Certified Class A Contractor with $50M bonding capacity and more than $10M in company owned equipment.

This role is paired directly with a Senior Project Manager and carries real day to day project responsibility from the start, with a defined path toward running independent projects.

Full time, based in the Richmond, VA area, with travel primarily local.

$110,000 to $145,000 annually, based on skills and experience.

What You'll Do

This role drives submittals, RFIs, and procurement schedules to keep field crews ahead of the work, and coordinates subcontractors and supplier purchase orders to protect schedule commitments. The assistant project manager tracks quantities, production, and costs against budget, flagging variances early, and supports monthly payment requisitions, cost projections, and project documentation. The role includes participating in weekly project team meetings covering schedule and cost review, gaining direct exposure to how profitable heavy civil projects are managed.

As the candidate develops in the role, responsibilities expand to include owner and inspector interface, schedule updates, and change management. The role also supports a safety culture maintained across every level of the project.

Required Qualifications
  • 2 to 5 years of experience on heavy civil, highway, or utility projects (field engineer, project engineer, or current APM background)
  • Working knowledge of construction scheduling and cost tracking
  • B.S. in Civil Engineering or Construction Management, or equivalent field experience
  • Valid driver's license with a good driving record
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Heavy Job, Bluebeam, or Primavera P6
  • Prior experience supporting submittals, RFIs, or procurement on a heavy civil or highway project team
  • Familiarity with monthly payment requisition processes and cost projection reporting

$110,000 to $145,000 annually, based on skills and experience
