Chair, Department of Periodontics

Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry is seeking applicants for a full-time faculty position as chair of the Department of Periodontics. This senior faculty leadership role provides strategic oversight of the department’s academic, clinical, research, and service missions and advances the school’s commitment to excellence in education, scholarship, and patient care.

The Chair provides leadership for departmental operations and promotes a balanced integration of teaching, research, and clinical care while working collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and institutional partners. The Chair serves on the Board of VCU Dental Care (Dentistry@VCU), the LLC providing services to the School of Dentistry, and oversees clinical staff operations for VCU Dental Care.

• faculty recruitment, mentoring, evaluation and support for promotion and tenure processes;
• oversight of departmental financial affairs;
• ensuring compliance with school, university, and state policy regulations;
• lead educational programs across predoctoral, postdoctoral, graduate, and advanced dental education, fostering interdisciplinary and integrated curricula;
• support resident preparation for specialty board examinations;
• serve as a role model for excellence and innovation in teaching;
• support high-quality, patient-centered care and promote best business practices and clinic productivity;
• maintain an active research and scholarly agenda, including extramural funding;
• mentor faculty, students, and postdoctoral trainees;
• collaborate with investigators across the School of Dentistry and the university.

• DDS or DMD or equivalent degree, eligible for licensure in Virginia;
• completion of a Commission on Dental Accreditation accredited advanced education program in periodontics and a Certificate in periodontics;
• record of scholarly achievement;
• desire to mentor future dental practitioners and ability to incorporate adult learning theory, evidence-based oral health care, innovation in student learning, and critical thinking;
• demonstrated ability to contribute to a humanistic environment of learning and discovery and embrace modern technology;
• experience or commitment to fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population;
• preferred:
  Board Certification by the American Board of Periodontology, clinical practice experience and practice growth and management experience, prior administrative or program leadership experience.
