Duties & Responsibilities:

The School of Dentistry’s Department of General Practice is seeking applicants for a full-time faculty position to provide teaching, research, scholarly activities, and patient care. This faculty position will provide didactic and clinical teaching, mentoring to pre‑doctoral students and residents, scholarly activity, service, research, and participation in intramural faculty practice (optional). The role includes, but is not limited to, course directorship, teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate dental students in preparation for private practice, service, and scholarship.

Methods of teaching will include clinical and didactic instruction, curriculum development, scholarly activity, mentoring, and patient care.

The primary mission of the School of Dentistry is to educate practitioners capable of meeting the general oral‑health needs of the communities they serve. Integral parts of this mission are research, scholarly activity, patient care, leadership in dental education, and collaboration with units within VCU and VCUHealth System.

Position Responsibilities:

Teaching:

Responsibilities include clinical and didactic teaching of 75–100 pre‑doctoral students in practice management and running highly productive practices. The position may lead a practice group or serve as a course director, teaching and mentoring undergraduate students. Faculty members are expected to teach in an integrated curriculum that includes baccalaureate, graduate, and professional education and to foster transformative learning informed by interdisciplinary research and scholarship.

Research:

Faculty members may participate in research protocols and collaborate with dental research programs and investigators.

Clinical:

This position will provide a teaching and leadership role in the dentistry clinics, seeing patients, working with students, and collaborating with faculty and staff to promote best business practices and increase clinic productivity. The position may also participate in the Dental Faculty Private Practice.

Service:

The faculty member will serve the Department of General Practice, the School of Dentistry, and VCU by participating on committees and task forces as requested, and will be encouraged to engage in dentistry‑related community service activities.

Required Qualifications:
  • DDS or DMD Degree, or equivalent
  • Eligibility for a dental license in Virginia
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Extensive dental clinic experience
  • Expertise in teaching dental practice management through clinical and didactic experiences
  • Desire to mentor future dental practitioners
  • Ability to adapt to change and embrace modern technology
  • Ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds
  • Commitment to a humanistic learning environment
  • Ability to incorporate adult learning theory, evidence‑based care, and critical thinking
  • For tenure‑eligible Assistant Professor rank: established research agenda and potential for external funding or scholarship
  • For tenure‑eligible Associate or Professor rank: well‑developed scholarly/research portfolio with evidence of multidisciplinary applications and external funding
