This Opportunity
WSP is currently searching for a Part Time Project Architectural Historian to serve Washington, DC, Richmond, VA, or Baltimore, MD offices; additional Mid‑Atlantic or Central Appalachian locations may be considered. The role focuses on heritage & cultural resources projects, supporting federal, state, and commercial clients.
Your Impact- Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate reporting, evaluation, and documentation.
- Assist in basic architectural history work related to cultural resource management—research, report writing, and documentation of historic above‑ground resources.
- Comply with safety guidelines and site‑specific procedures during resource surveys.
- Apply National Park Service and Secretary of the Interior guidance to evaluate historic significance and impacts.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company resources and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
- BA required, with coursework in Historic Architecture, Historic Preservation, History or a related field.
- 3‑5 years of post‑education experience as an historian, architectural historian, or similar role.
- Knowledge of Secretary of the Interior Standards (36 C.F.R. §61) in Historic Preservation and/or History.
- Strong understanding of architectural resource significance recommendations and justifications.
- Good organizational skills and proficiency with standard office computer applications.
- Familiarity with above‑ground historic architectural and cultural surveys, including American architectural forms, styles, and details, archival research, standard documentation, preparation of architectural reports, maintenance and treatment plans, historic context, and significance assessments under National Register criteria.
- Ability to synthesize field data and archival research to address project research questions.
- Valid driver’s license and successful background check.
- Master’s Degree (MA/MHP) or graduate‑level certificate.
- Two years of demonstrable experience in Cultural Resource Management.
- Experience performing surveys and reporting with State Historic Preservation Offices in Virginia, Maryland, or surrounding states.
- Experience with ESRI GIS software packages including Field Maps and ArcGIS Online.
- Technical skill or specialty such as American architecture, historic bridges, cultural landscapes, cemetery investigations, archival research, preservation planning, HABS/HAER/HALS recordation, National Register nominations, etc.

CompensationExpected Salary (all locations, based on 24 hr per week): $26,000 – $44,500. WSP USA reserves the right to adjust compensation based on education, experience, skills, and geographic location.
