Overview

Colonial Webb is seeking talented Mechanical Designers to join our Design team in Richmond to generate CAD documents, project coordination drawings, working shop drawings, and any documents to support shop and construction operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and detail work efficiently and in accordance with plans, specifications, and Colonial Webb fabrication standards.
  • Advise the Project Manager on conflicts and document modifications.
  • Provide marked‑up submittals to the Project Manager, including fire, smoke, and control devices, dampers, valves, and specialty equipment.
  • Collaborate with the Project Manager to reduce installation cost through efficient layout and acceptable changes to contract drawings.
  • Create efficient layouts by eliminating unnecessary duct, pipe, and fittings during coordination.
  • Monitor and report to the Project Manager when coordination requires work beyond what is indicated on the contract drawings.
  • Provide training and support to new and existing designers on CAD software and equipment.
  • Contact the Virtual Construction Manager when conflicts arise in direction or priority.
  • Estimate completion of assignments for the Virtual Construction Manager.
  • Communicate with the Project Manager or Project Engineer as required to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Document directives and notify the Virtual Construction Manager of any changes affecting work completion.
  • Provide and review daily/weekly progress reports (footage, weld inches, hangers, etc.).
  • Generate full coordination and fabrication drawings and provide all necessary paperwork for the job (pounds of metal, accessories, footage, weld inches, feet of pipe, etc.).
  • Produce clear, dimensional, and accurate drawings and spool sheets.
  • Visit job sites as necessary to complete the assignment.
  • Attend project turnover and manufacturing meetings as requested.
Qualifications
  • High‑level understanding of mechanical pipe, plumbing, or sheet metal in commercial and industrial construction.
  • 3+ years of field experience in the trade or 3+ years of direct design/detailing experience.
  • Proficiency in CAD detailing and design.
  • Preferred experience with Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks, 3D design, and fabrication suite software.
  • Ability to read and understand contract drawings, specifications, and submittals.
  • Basic computer skills (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Ability to work on multiple projects and meet project deadlines.
  • Occasional job‑site work as required.
