Work Schedule:
Monday‑Friday based upon student needs; evenings and weekends on a student need basis.
- Deliver engaging and practical instruction in all aspects of power line work, including pole climbing, equipment operation, electrical theory, and safety protocols.
- Teach students to properly and safely use tools of the trade, including climbing gear, hand tools, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Demonstrate and coach proper climbing techniques and physical conditioning required for line work.
- Develop students’ soft skills such as teamwork, communication, reliability, and workplace professionalism.
- Maintain training facilities, equipment, and materials in safe working condition.
- Work collaboratively with program staff, employers, and consortium/advisory board members to ensure training reflects current industry needs.
- Mentor and motivate students, providing constructive feedback and support to help them succeed.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, student progress, and competency evaluations.
- Attend training for instructor certification (travel required) and recertification as needed.
- Assist Program Manager with build/set up of Middletown Powerline Worker training facility.
- Assist Program Manager with curriculum development of Powerline Worker Program.
- Review strengths and weaknesses of the Powerline Worker program effectiveness and provide suggestions and feedback to program manager.
According to DHRM policy 1.61 Teleworking, effective July 5, 2022, Virginia state employees will return to the workplace. Consistent with pre‑pandemic policies, telework may be an option for certain eligible positions. Eligible positions are determined by the type of work and job requirements of the position, as defined by heads of agencies.
Qualifications- Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a journeyman lineworker or in a closely related role in the electric utility industry.
- Class A or B CDL license.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physical tasks associated with the trade.
- Demonstrated expertise in safety practices and lineworker procedures, including pole climbing and equipment use.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Prior instructional or mentoring experience preferred, especially in an adult learning or workforce training environment.
- Additional industry related certifications (OSHA, VDOT Flagger, First Aid/CPR).
- Heavy equipment operation experience.
- Technical or vocational training certificate in electrical utility work.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

Travel as per any required duties of the position, such as to sites/campuses and any training. Ability to cover assignments throughout the college service region as necessary for the job is required.
