Duties & Responsibilities
The Medical Student and Clerkship Specialist is responsible for supporting M1 – M4 medical student education in the Department of Surgery, working in collaboration with the Clerkship Directors, Department Chair, Vice Chair for Education, and Department Administration to ensure successful performance in regard to the department’s educational missions.
They independently oversee the day‑to‑day operations of the M3 Surgery Clerkship including organizing student records, scheduling lectures, coordinating evaluations and grading meetings, and ensuring compliance with LCME accreditation requirements.
They support M1, M2, and M4 students by engaging with surgical preceptors and student interest groups, overseeing the annual M4 Transitions to Residency course, facilitating medical student records access for research, and managing student shadowing, observership, and visiting students.
This role serves as a key liaison between students, faculty, department administration, and the School of Medicine, ensuring a cohesive and well‑structured surgical education experience across all four years of medical student training.

Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Graduate or equivalent
- Experience in program coordination, academic administration, or a related field.
- Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and database management.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.
- Strong problem‑solving skills and ability to adapt to changing program needs.
- Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience in medical education or graduate medical education administration.
- Familiarity with LCME accreditation requirements and medical school curriculum structures.
- Experience working with electronic curriculum systems (E‑curriculum, Med Hub, LEO, or similar platforms).
- Knowledge of residency and medical student evaluation processes.
- Ability to analyze and interpret data for reporting and compliance purposes.
- Experience managing large‑scale educational programs or clerkships.
$50,000 - $55,000
