Mountain Empire Community College invites applications for adjunct instructors to teach in the School of Arts, Sciences, and Human Services. The College is a comprehensive two‑year institution serving residents of Lee, Scott, Wise, and Dickenson counties, and the City of Norton. This position requires teaching in on‑campus, online, and nursing clinical settings during daytime, evenings, and weekends. Salary is based on academic preparation and work experience, following the VCCS Adjunct Pay Schedule and VCCS‑29 Faculty Ranking Profile.

Adjunct instructor positions are available in various areas within the School, including but not limited to arts, sciences, education, and business. These positions are open on a continuous, open‑until‑filled basis. Applicants will be contacted on an as‑needed basis. ResponsibilitiesAdjunct faculty members are responsible for effectively planning and teaching courses in a classroom or virtual environment to students with a variety of academic backgrounds and experiences. Responsibilities include delivering high‑quality instruction, fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment, and actively contributing to the academic, professional, and community life of the college. The role emphasizes instructional excellence through innovative teaching practices, curriculum development, and assessment.
It requires a commitment to continuous professional growth aligned with the college’s mission and goals.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of a Governor‑declared emergency.
Qualifications – Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA's)- In‑depth knowledge of the specific discipline or subject area relevant to the teaching assignment.
- Familiarity with diverse teaching strategies, instructional technologies, and assessment techniques to support student learning.
- Understanding of higher education standards, accreditation requirements, and institutional policies.
- Awareness of diverse student backgrounds, learning styles, and barriers to learning with strategies to promote an inclusive classroom environment.
- Knowledge of college procedures, governance, and administrative requirements.
- Ability to clearly convey complex concepts both verbally and in writing.
- Skills in developing engaging, well‑organized, and accessible course materials and activities.
- Proficiency in designing assessments that accurately measure student learning and providing constructive feedback.
- Competence with learning management systems (LMS), multimedia tools, and other educational technologies.
- Ability to motivate students, foster critical thinking, and create a positive learning environment.
- Flexibility to modify teaching approaches based on student needs, feedback, and evolving educational practices.
- Upholding the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and respect in all interactions.
- Bachelor’s degree in the teaching field or an Associate’s in the teaching field with demonstrated competence in the field.
- Minimum of two years of related occupational experience.
