Hours and Term7:45 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. with additional hours as needed to fulfill after‑school coaching/activity responsibilities. The fellowship may run for either one or two academic years (2026‑2027 and 2027‑2028).

Head of the Middle School, Middle School Director of Curriculum and Instruction, and Paired Mentor Teacher(s).
US Childrey Fellow:
Head of the Upper School, Upper School Dean of Faculty, Upper School Department Chair, and Paired Mentor Teacher(s).
St. Christopher’s School, the largest all‑boys school in Virginia, seeks two Teaching Fellows for the 2026‑2027 school year – a Middle School Childrey Teaching Fellow and an Upper School Childrey Teaching Fellow. Serving approximately 1,040 boys, the fellowship provides aspiring teachers valuable experience under guidance of seasoned mentors. The fellow will observe, practice, and eventually lead lessons in an academic class, while also supporting advising, coaching, study‑hall proctoring, and co‑curricular activities.
PrincipalResponsibilities
- Collaborate with a mentor teacher to teach two academic classes with responsibilities growing throughout the year.
- Co‑advising (8–10 students) with an experienced teacher/advisor.
- Coaching or assisting with a significant co‑curricular activity.
- Attend team and faculty meetings, all‑school professional development, the Curriculum Institute if scheduled.
- Attend chapel regularly.
- Handle other duties (study halls, recess, etc.) as assigned.
- Create a positive environment where all boys feel known and valued.
- Collaborate with colleagues to design meaningful learning experiences.
- Plan and prepare lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning.
- Deliver individual, whole‑group, and small‑group instruction as appropriate.
- Assess student progress using a variety of formal and informal data collection tools and methods and provide timely feedback.
- Manage student behavior in accordance with best practices for teaching boys.
- Foster communication and respectful partnership with parents/guardians.
- Communicate in a timely and efficient manner with parents, students, and colleagues.
- Engage in continuing professional growth and development, including staying abreast of best practices for teaching boys.
- Participate in the life of the School through committee work and regular presence at major events.

- Commitment to best practices in education, as articulated in the Teaching Excellence Document and the Center for the Study of Boys.
- Commitment to diversity, community, and inclusion as expressed in the Diversity and Inclusion Statement.
- Hold a bachelor’s degree with strong academic record in the subject area or a closely related field and demonstrated leadership in a significant non‑academic area.
- Possess thorough knowledge of and passion for teaching the discipline being taught, including experience employing inquiry‑based instructional methodologies.
- Be familiar, comfortable, and open to integrating technology into the classroom.
- Collaborate effectively with members of an academic department, grade‑level advisor groups, and the Middle School faculty.
- Enhance students’ skills in creative thinking and problem solving, intellectual curiosity and risk taking, research and analysis, collaboration and teamwork, and applying core knowledge to new situations.
- Possess excellent problem‑solving, communication, and analytic skills.
- Exhibit a growth mindset, be creative and flexible, and demonstrate a sense of humor.
- Accept constructive feedback as part of professional growth and development.
- Model professionalism and integrity at all times.
- Enjoy working with young people, especially boys.
- Must be able to circulate among students in a classroom for a minimum of four class periods per day.
- Must be able to move between classrooms and buildings as assigned.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
