Position: Upper School Science Teacher (Biology, Chemistry, Physics)

Upper School Science Teacher (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) Position Summary

The Hunter School seeks a full-time Upper School Science Teacher (Upper School teachers are called "tutors" at the Hunter School) to teach Biology, Chemistry, and Physics within a classical Christian framework. This position requires strong content mastery across the major laboratory sciences and the ability to present science as the disciplined study of God’s orderly creation. The teacher will cultivate scientific literacy, mathematical reasoning, laboratory precision, and intellectual virtue in students in grades 9–12.

Instruction must be rigorous, college-preparatory, and integrated thoughtfully with a Christian worldview consistent with the school’s mission.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Instruction & Curriculum
    • Teach upper school courses including:
      • Biology
      • Chemistry
      • Physics
      • Advanced or elective science courses as assigned
    • Deliver structured, content-rich instruction aligned with a Biology → Chemistry → Physics sequence.
    • Emphasize conceptual mastery, logical reasoning, and quantitative analysis.
    • Integrate laboratory experimentation, formal lab reports, and scientific writing.
    • Prepare students for rigorous college STEM coursework.
  • Classical Christian Integration
    • Present science as the rational investigation of a created and ordered universe.
    • Help students understand the historical development of scientific thought within a Christian intellectual tradition.
    • Address contemporary scientific issues with clarity, charity, and theological discernment.
    • Model intellectual humility, curiosity, and reverence for truth.
  • Laboratory Oversight & Safety
    • Maintain safe and orderly laboratory environments.
    • Oversee chemical storage, equipment care, and inventory management.
    • Ensure adherence to all safety regulations and protocols.
    • Train students in proper lab technique and scientific documentation.
  • Assessment & Academic Accountability
    • Design assessments that measure deep conceptual understanding and analytical reasoning.
    • Require formal lab reports emphasizing data interpretation and structured argumentation.
    • Maintain accurate grade books and provide timely communication with families.
    • Offer academic support and enrichment opportunities.
  • Student Mentorship & Community Participation
    • Serve as a faculty advisor (if assigned).
    • Participate in house activities, retreats, and school traditions.
    • Support science competitions, fairs, or academic clubs.
    • Contribute positively to the culture of order, joy, and seriousness appropriate to a classical school.
    Qualifications

    Required

    • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or related scientific field.
    • Demonstrated mastery of high school–level Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
    • Ability to teach algebra-based physics.
    • Affirmation of the Hunter School’s statement of faith and other covenants.
    • Commitment to classical Christian education.

    Preferred

    • Master’s degree in a scientific discipline.
    • Experience teaching multiple upper-level sciences.
    • Experience in classical Christian education.
