Alexandria. Pay Band: 00. FLSA Exempt. Hiring Range: commensurate based on education, experience and other qualifying credentials. Telework options subject to change. No bilingual or multilingual skill requirement.

General Description

The primary responsibility of a faculty member at Northern Virginia Community College is to provide quality instruction for the students. The major emphasis is on excellent teaching by working with students in classrooms, laboratories, individual conferences, and related activities. Faculty help students develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity to become better workers and better citizens.

The Associate Instructor position is a restricted appointment with an instructional load of 36‑39 credits over the academic year. This position is relieved of most administrative and governance duties to spend time in student support and student success related activities. The Associate Instructor contract contains no expectation or guarantee of continued employment. NOVA faculty may be assigned to any campus based upon enrollment and staffing needs.

This position is funded with non‑continuous or non‑recurring funding and is subject to continuation based on fiscal year funds and the needs of the college.

Duties and Tasks
  • Teach various courses in the Information Technology discipline (ITD, ITE, ITN, ITP), including classes in the Year Up program.
  • Courses are offered in traditional, hybrid, and distance learning environments.
  • All faculty members must be available to teach day, evening and weekend classes.
  • Faculty members also serve as faculty advisors, serve on division/campus/college committees, and participate in curriculum development and assessment.
Essential Functions

The College expects each faculty member to: meet assigned classes regularly, submit required records and reports routinely, teach the prescribed courses of study with the established texts, conduct requisite student conferences, hold required office hours, adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with College policies, procedures, and regulations, and answer emails in a responsible fashion. Teaching faculty are required to maintain current competence in their respective discipline or field of specialization and to advise students.

  • This position is restricted for the 2026‑2027 academic year with no expectation or guarantee of a future contract beyond this time frame.
Employment Requirements

Employees must reside in Virginia, Maryland, or the District of Columbia.

Special Assignments
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
  • May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
  • The ability to effectively teach Information Technology concepts in the classroom.
  • Ability to use technology to enhance classroom instruction.
  • Ability to use online resources and Learning Management Systems.
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and oral/written communication skills.
  • Ability to teach a combination of day, evening, weekend, and online classes.
  • Ability to be flexible to work at any of the College’s locations.
  • Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check.
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in the teaching field (Information Technology) or master’s degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in Information Technology coursework. Qualifying degree and coursework must be awarded by a regionally accredited institution.
  • A minimum of two years of full‑time related occupational experience. Part‑time experience will be converted to its full‑time equivalent.
Additional Considerations
  • Experience teaching a wide range of Information Technology courses.
  • Certification in teaching hybrid or online courses. Online course development and teaching training such as Quality Matters.
  • Industry certification in courses such as A+, Network+, Security+, Data+ or equivalent certification/training.
