The Hunter School Lower School Teacher – Second Grade Opening

The Hunter School is seeking a Second Grade teacher who loves the humble, beautiful work of the Lower School: teaching children to read carefully, form letters well, speak truthfully, attend quietly, number the world accurately, retell good stories, sing with confidence, and receive correction without losing cheer.

This is not a position for someone looking merely to manage a classroom or distribute worksheets. This is a position for teachers who believe that small habits become loves, that young children are capable of real intellectual delight, and that Christian formation happens through ordinary faithfulness repeated over time.

About Hunter

Hunter is a Christ-centered classical Christian school in Richmond, Virginia. Our lower school is ordered around strong academic foundations, joyful discipline, Scripture, song, memory, story, number, nature, and the formation of Christian character.

We are entering a season of renewed clarity and stability, and we are looking for teachers who want to help build a faculty culture marked by seriousness, warmth, humility, and good order.

Responsibilities
  • Teaching core lower‑school subjects with clarity, warmth, and order
  • Cultivating strong habits of attention, obedience, wonder, memory, narration, and joyful diligence
  • Supporting reading, phonics, handwriting, spelling, arithmetic, history, literature, Scripture, and other grade‑level work
  • Implementing Hunter’s curriculum with consistency while bringing appropriate teacherly life and judgment to the classroom
  • Communicating clearly and charitably with parents
  • Participating in faculty meetings, professional development, school events, and other assigned duties
  • Helping students grow in Christian character, classroom responsibility, and love of learning
Qualifications
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Wholeheartedly embrace Hunter’s Christ‑centered mission
  • Demonstrate strong classroom presence, warmth, organization, and follow‑through
  • Communicate well with parents and colleagues
  • Show a desire to grow as a classical Christian educator
  • Be able to work within an established curriculum and shared school culture
  • Model Christian faith, humility, charity, and intellectual seriousness

Prior experience in classical Christian education is preferred but not required. We welcome applicants who are eager to learn and who are aligned with the principles of classical Christian education.
