Description of the Job

The Virginia Commonwealth University, School of the Arts (VCUarts) seeks a Fundamentals of Working in Metals and Jewelry instructor to teach in the Summer Pre-College Program for high school students. The Summer Pre-College Program at VCUarts is a three-week program that offers rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors the opportunity to take one non-credit course ining and orientation will be required of the candidate prior to the start of the program.

Classes will run for three weeks, Monday through Friday, six hours a day.

This instructor will demonstrate mastery in using basic hand tools and processes safely, including but not limited to saw frame for sawing, files for filing, flexible shaft and drill press for drilling, and hammers for forming. They will also display mastery in cold connections and the acetylene torch system, including the ability to turn on and off and to teach proper use for fabrication.

The position requires the ability to open and close the studio, implement safety procedures, and maintain a safe working environment.

Responsibilities
  • Complete required youth training delivered by The Protection of Minors Office
  • Lesson planning and interdisciplinary instruction for high school students in fine arts
  • Create a course syllabus and daily projects/assignments
  • Participate in the overall skills development of the students through discussion, critique, evaluation
  • Plan and select student work to display for end of program event, such as an exhibition
  • Ensure quality and effectiveness of the Summer Pre-College Program
  • Enforce Program policies and procedures at all times
  • Other duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator
Required Qualifications
  • MFA degree, or current MFA student, with college-level teaching or assistant teaching experience in sculpture and extended media
  • Engaging, enthusiastic, enjoys working with creative and passionate students
  • Outstanding organization, communication, and presentation skills
  • Able to meet diverse skill levels in the subject through differentiated instruction
  • A clear understanding of university and program policies, and the ability to closely monitor students throughout class to ensure their safety
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so
