Job Summary
Virginia Peninsula Community College, a two‑year institution of higher education, seeks an Adjunct Instructor for the Workforce Development Department’s Marine Electrician program. The faculty member will deliver the NCCER Core courses and Electrical Levels 1 and 2, teaching up to 1,500 instructional hours per year. The position is part‑time and may involve day, evening, or weekend classes. Salary is commensurate with experience and training.
EssentialFunctions
- Design and deliver instruction for day and evening classes.
- Teach residential electrical theory including basic hand tools, cable installation, and safety practices.
- Assess and grade students.
- Maintain an adequate on‑campus presence.
- Communicate promptly with students, staff, and administrators.
- Prepare instructional materials, maintain laboratory and equipment needs, and secure instructional aids.
- Establish and maintain industry relationships to keep training relevant and create employment pipelines.
- Assist the agency or state government during emergency declarations, as directed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director.
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- Significant work experience in the electrical field.
- Prior experience delivering or developing training.
- Passion for the discipline and commitment to a student‑centered philosophy with academic excellence for diverse learners.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills with students, colleagues, staff, and administrators.
- Willingness to serve the needs of traditional and non‑traditional students from diverse backgrounds and age groups.
- Ability to adapt instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs.
- Plan and organize instruction to maximize documented student learning.
- Adopt fair measurement methods for student progress toward learning outcomes.
- Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently; return work promptly to promote maximum learning.
- Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grade rosters by established deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience and/or strong interest in teaching and inspiring adult learners.
- Must be able to work at all campus locations.
- Successful completion of a criminal background investigation is required; applicants may also need to complete the Commonwealth’s Statement of Economic Interest.
- Community college teaching experience.
- Experience teaching online, hybrid, or traditional face‑to‑face classrooms.
- Proficiency in instructional technologies and learning management systems such as Canvas.
- Ability to assess, measure, and align student outcomes within courses or programs.
- Operation of a state vehicle.
- No supervisory responsibilities.
- Minimal required travel.
