Virginia Peninsula Community College (VPCC) is a two‑year public institution serving residents of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg, James City, and York counties. Position OverviewVPCC seeks an Adjunct Instructor to teach up to 1,500 instructional hours per year in the Workforce Development Department. The instructor will provide career‑technical training for the Facilities Maintenance Technician program, delivering courses such as HBI Core and HBI Maintenance Technician
2. Instruction will occur during day, evening, or weekend sessions as needed.
- Design and deliver instruction for day and evening classes.
- Deliver courses that cover knowledge of Facilities Maintenance systems.
- Responsible for student assessment and grading.
- Maintain adequate on‑campus presence.
- Provide timely communication with students, staff, and administrators.
- Develop curriculum and instructional materials for Basic Principles for Construction, Carpentry, Electrical Principles, Building Construction Technology, Housing Wiring, HVAC, Masonry, Plumbing, Green Applications for Residential Construction, and Appliance Repair.
- Motivate and counsel students, addressing behavior, training, or study habits.
- Coordinate with campus staff to resolve student training issues.
- Track student attendance and provide feedback on assignments promptly.
- Maintain program inventories, consumables, supplies, and equipment.
- Monitor lab and equipment needs for proper operations.
- Establish relationships with the maintenance‑technician industry to keep training relevant and develop job pipelines for graduates.
- Participate in program evaluation and college activities.
- Perform additional duties or special projects as assigned by the Director.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Significant work experience in the Facilities Maintenance field.
- Prior experience delivering or developing training.
- A passion for the discipline and a commitment to a student‑centered philosophy.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with students, colleagues, staff, and administrators.
- Willingness to serve traditional and non‑traditional students from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to modify instructional methods to meet diverse student needs.
- Plan and organize instruction to maximize documented student learning.
- Implement fair measurement of student progress toward learning outcomes.
- Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grade rosters according to established deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience and interest in teaching and inspiring adult learners.
- Must be able to work at all VPCC campus locations.
- Community college teaching experience.
- Experience teaching online, hybrid, and face‑to‑face modalities.
- Proficiency with instructional technologies and learning management systems (e.g., Canvas).
- Proficiency in measuring, assessing, and aligning student outcomes.
- Journeyman or Master certification in one or more construction trades.
Position is part‑time and exempt. Telework options may be available and are subject to business needs. The appointment is a standing pool position with no guarantee of continued employment. The selected candidate will be required to complete a criminal background investigation and may need to submit an I‑9 form.
