Job Duties

This position will be based out of Headquarters in Richmond, VA but will travel within the Central Region to various Work center's, c-caps and correctional institutions.

To provide quality educational programs to enable incarcerated youth and adults to become responsible, productive, tax-paying members of their community.

To provide effective Career and Technical instruction in the assigned trade area; to assist assigned students to complete the required competencies for that trade area; demonstrate effective classroom or lab management; ensure that the lab is operated in compliance with all aspects of safety management; and to maintain accurate and current student records for the assigned student.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent.
At least two years of full‑time or 2000 hours of verifiable experience in the last five years in the relevant field or trade area for a teaching certificate.
Eligible for an Industrial/Technical Professional License/Certification in the relevant trade area or field.
Eligible for a teaching certificate by the Department of Education.

Submit all documentation for your provisional license to the licensure designee for VADOC during the first 90 days of employment.

Obtain a provisional license within the one‑year probationary period, which is the employee’s responsibility and required for continuing employment at the DOC.

Ability to engage students in one‑on‑one teaching and work with students and inmate aides in a classroom or lab environment.
Ability to maintain accurate records; knowledge and experience of policy and procedure governing adult education.
Possess working knowledge of basic adult education field, adult literacy, and computer software appropriate for program needs.
Experience in maintaining classroom, equipment, and inventories; demonstrate competency in the related field of current trade licensure.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in correctional education classroom management.
Five years of experience in the related trade or field.
Industrial/Technical Professional License/Certification in the relevant trade area or field.
Teaching certificate by the Department of Education.
Knowledge of all phases of the trade area; ability to supervise adult inmates in a classroom or lab environment.
Knowledge of DOC institutional policies and procedures and policies governing correctional education.
Ability to facilitate other instructors.
