Reynolds is one of the largest community colleges in Virginia and serves Virginia’s capital city and five nearby counties. Annually, our four campus sites serve approximately 13,000 credit students and provide training for 7,400 students through the Community College Workforce Alliance. The Academic Advisor will work in person with prospective and currently enrolled students to help them explore and identify career pathways that align with their interests, strengths, and long‑term goals. This position plays a key role in supporting students pursuing both academic and workforce programs, offering guidance that goes beyond academics to include non‑academic challenges that may impact progress.
Responsibilities- Provide in‑person academic advising and career exploration support
- Assist students in developing educational plans tailored to their goals
- Identify and address barriers that may affect student retention or completion
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of student interactions and outreach
- Refer students to college and community‑based support resources
- Initiate and follow through with academic interventions when needed
- Use advising technologies and student information systems to track progress and improve services
- Participate in ongoing professional development and training
- Support the college’s strategic goals and Flight Path initiatives through student‑centered engagement
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators to promote student success, equity, and continuous improvement
- Strong attention to detail and a solid understanding of college workflows and processes
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse student population and navigate complex student situations with sound judgment
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Capacity to work independently in a fast‑paced environment while meeting performance goals and deadlines
- Proven ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with faculty, staff, and administrators
- Demonstrated reliability, timeliness, and flexibility in managing day‑to‑day responsibilities
- Willingness and ability to learn and use technology tools to document advising interactions and support student follow‑up
- Comprehensive knowledge of curricular programs, academic requirements, career pathways, and enrollment services within a higher education setting
- Ability to apply student development theory to support the academic and personal growth of a diverse student population
- Proficiency in interpreting and communicating institutional policies and procedures
- Working knowledge of college admission and enrollment processes
